What happens to those who dont match? How large is this pool?
Is the reason most dont match usually at the fault of them being less competitive or is there genuinely just not enough space, and residencies are a crapshoot?

"Get involved". What does this mean? You have a higher chance of being matched because you were involved in some clubs? That makes you a better doctor? Just some rhetorical questions

Does being in club make you a better doctor? No not at all. Being involved in things shows you have a personality, it shows you aren't a robot who just studies all day. Nobody wants someone like that at a residency. It can also show some leadership skills if you hold a position within a club. Most residents have a say on who matches. If the residents don't like you or your personality then they won't let you match there

Yes to all of those questions. You have a better chance because you were in clubs. It makes you a better doctor because you make connections with people who will be in the medical field, you get better at associating with all types of cultures and people which you will do with patients as a doctor, you enhance leadership skills, you learn and keep up to date with stuff in the field, and you learn to manage time wisely. So yes, getting involved is important and will help you become a better doctor
There are ~5 states that don't require residency to practice. The most common path for the unmatched is to do a Perceptorship with a Podiatrist and retry for the match next cycle. I'm not sure how feasible these options are in reality.
