I got an acceptance to Howard University, but I haven't been seeing much activity about it in the forums. I also got waitlisted at a couple other state schools but i'm still waiting to hear back from them and keeping my fingers crossed. I just wanted to know if anyone had any thoughts/opinions about the school? I know that choosing the right dental school where you'll get the best education is a very important decision that will affect the rest of your life. I've been getting a lot of mixed responses from my dentist and some people that actually attended Howard. Howard is an older school that is probably not as technologically advanced as other schools (such as not being paperless and not digital). Any feedback would be helpful, thanks! 🙂

Any Texas school > Howard. But if it's the only school you got accepted to, then you don't have much a choice. Just put the deposit down for Howard on the last possible day and then hope Texas spots open up later.

I was also accepted at Howard ( i applied to 10 schools and its in my top 3, so I'm likely attending!!). Though i agree its important you go to a school where you'll receive the best/better education....it maybe tricky deciphering what 'best' means in an area like Dentistry. Being a good and successful Dentist in the end will be interpreted by some (mostly your satisfied patients) as a testament to the 'best' education that you received - even if YOU don't think YOU attended the school with the 'best' education. Also, being successful in dentistry is not only about didactic competency, but also heavily reliant on your personality and manual dexterity (this part of my contribution is based my assumption that you'll want to one day be successful 🙂 ).

I am glad that at least you have been getting mixed reviews about the school from people who went there. I would humbly advice you seek out those whose reviews have been positive and ask them how and why they liked it there and what they did to successfully complete the program.....and follow their advice. If you get accepted to other schools and you now have choices....then seek out those with the negatives and hear them out too....to help make your choice. Remember, no school is 100% positive.

I believe Howard will give you the basics that you need to know even without all of its technology....And you can build on them later. Just STUDY AND WORK AS HARD AS YOU POSSIBLY CAN irrespective of where you go to school and i believe in the end, you'll be fine.

Beyond a certain point, a school is a school....its what you learn and how you apply yourself that matters.

I hope you get other offers from schools. Good luck.

thanks for the advice, and for taking the time to respond! I might be seeing you at Howard then Pistorious! Good luck to you as well 🙂

No matter what school you go to the end result is the same, you will be a dentist, the only difference will be the amount of loans you have to pay back, I was accepted to Howard and I will most likely be going there

Yes, we might meet at Howard. Would you consider moving or posting your question in the dental forum? Since most pre-dents are not yet in the school, we're unable to really say much about it. The dental students will be able to offer more insight.

That's a good idea, i'll do that.

That's a very optimistic view about comparing schools.

Life is all about being optimistic 🙂
If we werent optimists than most of life would be depressing, and im sure no one wants that, got to make the best of the hand your dealt in life.

showmeurteeth: i think your dental education is what you make of it. You get out when you put in.. I know some people look down upon the fact that Howard is not as technologically advanced as other schools. However, as crazy as it seems, I actually like that because I want to prac dentistry in underserved communities and the chances of me having all the crazy technology could be slim. For example: I'd much rather learn how to analyze film the old fashion way which is harder so that if I ever have to analyze it on a computer program that helps you change the contrast of the picture, it will be much easier.

Just my take on things, Moral of the story, I believe Howard is a great school but just like any other school, you have to work hard if its really something you want.

Good luck!! 🙂

Hope to meet you guys soon!

I'm going to be honest with you...
The interview wasn't bad. It was one faculty member and one student in the same room, alternating questions. Some questions were kinda off for me and tough to answer, such as "If you have a professor that feels women are second rate to men, how would you feel about that?" We also had an essay question. I got the feeling that the school was not very organized... most of the other schools I interviewed at provided a sheet with financial information that broke down costs, etc, but at Howard it was simply a lecture. The school isn't very up to date technology-wise, so that was a big negative for me. Other than that, the school was just okay. Didn't really wow me. I got accepted there, so if I don't get into my state school i'll be attending. You'll get your DDS wherever you go. Hope this helps!

All the above is true. the atmosphere of the interview depends on the interviewers...mine weren't exactly laid back, but weren't cut throat either. The questions were standard (eg why howard, why dentistry, tell us about yourself etc). During the interview, i got the impression that the students got along really well, and helped each other out. There wasn't much technology.....and hall in which we listened to the various presentations did not even have a white board (green board with chalk) or a projector or a computer (teacher station). This made me wonder how lectures would be like. But all this aside, i also got the impression that it was doable in that school. We even got to interact with one of their ortho residents who had graduated from there. You'll be fine at the interview. Concentrate on nailing it and worry about the other things once you get in.
Good Luck.

I got accepted to howard today! still waiting to hear back from one other school. I may be joining some of you guys though!

I just had my interview on feb 8 and they said they would be getting back to us feb 17 .... Did anyone else have such a quick turn around time??

I had my interview jan 11. and found out on feb 01. so it was about three weeks. Two weeks sounds about right...may take a little longer.
