Thoughts on MCG?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
MCG was super cool when I went there last year. They have a very laid back program director (one of the nicest guys I met on the interview trail), and a lot of unique EM opportunities outside the department with law enforcement, search and rescue, sporting events, and international trips. The ED looks very new, and as a bonus you have access to the medical gym on campus. Overall a great place. 👍

I'm interviewing at MCG in January. Has anyone interviewed there yet? Feel free to PM me.

I rotated at MCG last year and really liked the program. I agree that the director is awesome. I thought both the program and faculty were top notch. They have a very active tactical EMS and disaster management program. It was my #2 choice. I highly recommend it. Augusta is not that bad an area to live either, only 2 hours for Atlanta.

I am a student at MCG and the last two replies were pretty right on. The PD is definately the highlight of the program and he will go to bat for you regardless. The other faculty are very strong as well. The program has widely varying interests as already stated, if there is something that you are interested in, they will do everything to make it happen. The ED runs pretty smoothly and the nursing staff does a solid job. Not to much penetrating trauma, but enough trauma and procedures to feel comfortable when you leave. It is an academic hospital, so you occassionally run into the pissed off intern in the middle of the night who doesn't want to admit pt X, but that is usually not a problem. The off service rotations are fairly benign.

People sometimes call Augusta "disgusta" and that was the impression I had before moving there a few years ago. The city is really trying to clean up the town and the downtown area is much nicer now with many new bars. You definately will never confuse this place for ATL or NY, but it is a great place for families. It is the cheapest place I have ever lived. Most residents buy large new homes, even med students can buy homes here. 2.5 hours to the beach and mountains. 2 hrs to atl

I am a 2nd year resident at MCG; you may PM me if you have specific questions. I would generally agree with all of the above comments.

I also agree with what has been said. I'm a PGY1 and talking to other EM residents at other programs I think that MCG matches up very well. Some people don't like Augusta, but where else can you buy a brand new 3 bedroom house in a nice area for $140,000? Go out to dinner the night before your interview, you'll be able to talk to more residents there. Ask whatever questions you have. We're one of the what you see is what you get programs.

I've heard that some of the off-service rotations are a bit lacking...any comment on that?
