I know it is very late in the game, but I am trying to get into dental school for the 08 cycle.

My DAT scores are 20 AA, 21 PAT
My GPA is 3.1 cumulative and about a 2.8 science

I have shadowed an oral surgeon for the past summer and have some research experience. Only a little volunteering/comm service though.

I am also a resident of New Jersey and would definitely metriculate to UMDNJ, Howard, NYU or BU if the opportunity permitted.

Any ideas if this is attainable, and any recommendations on other schools to apply to based on these numbers?

Thank you!

Do you have any post grad work under your belt (additional upper level science courses and etc) ?

how is your GPA trend?

i would look into a post bacc program or a one year masters

Doesn't look great for you, but its worth a shot and go for a post-bacc if you don't get in

Still hope for you, but you're going to have to work. Get an assisting job, or some job in the dental office...not just observing. Observing hours are excellent, you should have about 300 hours (at least that's what we had to have). Observe/work at different offices and different specialties. If you can do post-grad work that's good too. Your hardest classes are going to be your core science classes, so if those grades aren't your best, take them again and focus this time. Anatomy, Biochem, Microbiology...they like to look at these because it's supposed to give you an idea of how you'll be in dental school.

Bottom line, show passion. Don't give up and show them that this is what you want. Good luck!! And don't feel discouraged if you have to apply multiple times, it's very competitive. Just make sure you're showing growth between the application years! One last hint-- make sure the people in admissions know you, spend time at the dental schools observing/working/visiting.

how is your GPA trend?
frosh year 2.0
soph year 3.4
jr year 3.5

the problem was that i knocked out all my basic sciences frosh year and got straight c's in everything. after that, i got almost all As and a few Bs in the advanced ones (orgo, physiology, etc...)

I'd say 50/50 shot.
