This thread has gotten so far off topic... I am sorry to everyone I may have offended. That was not my intention. Nor was it my goal to rub anything in anyone's face. I only had good intentions. Apparently two words I have said (top ten) have started some heated debate. My mistake.

As I have said a few times, I just wanted to post an inspirational story that may help some people through the demoralizing process they are about to endure. I know reading things like this certainly gave me some snippet of comfort. Again, those of you out there on the interweb to whom this thread was intended, I hope you got something valuable from it... even if it was just some comfort.

Now, just to feed the fire... I never did specify whether I meant top research or primary care school.

There's even a DO school in the top 10 for primary care... Just sayin'

See, folks, he is toying with you intentionally. In other words, he is a troll...

See, folks, he is toying with you intentionally. In other words, he is a troll...

No, he specifically wasn't trying to make a big deal about getting into a 'top 10 school' [I don't care who's ranking it or why]. You were the one who pounced on the claim that he only made ONCE.

No one's toying with anyone. He's not posting here for the specific aim of satisfying your curiosity.

If he's a troll and intentionally toying with anyone (which I don't think he is), it's you. You're the one who got his panties in a twist over this thread...

Just so we're clear, there are 10 schools in the top ten. Here they are.

1. Harvard
2. Hopkins
3. Wash U
4. Penn
5. UCSF
6. Duke
6. U Wash
8. Stanford
9. UCLA
9. Yale

Hey what happened to Columbia and Weill Cornell? I'm sure those two schools are ranked higher than Yale. Also, how come Mayo isn't in there as well?

Just kidding - I think the concept of a top ten school is illusory.

I think the 8 schools I mentioned earlier are pretty much always in the top 10. That's like saying that Harvard, Yale, Stanford, MIT, Caltech, and Princeton are always top 10 undergrad schools.

No problem - remember, the internet is just like real life - except there are no inhibitions. People will insult each other on here whereas in real life they keep these things to themselves.

ah! mystery solved. 👍

  • GPA: the average for each entering class has consistently been 3.5. The range is fairly broad, with greatest emphasis placed on the science GPA. For those who got a slow start, we look for steady improvement. Most important are your grades in upper level science classes taken during the junior and senior years. Course work in the biological sciences and in biochemistry receives the closest scrutiny.

  • MCAT: the average for each entering class has ranged from 26 to 27. Here the range is somewhat narrower than the GPA review. If you are disappointed with your scores, don't be afraid to retake the MCAT. Success in medical school requires discipline and perseverance, so we look for individuals who keep trying to improve their performance.

OP's numbers are solid for this school.

actually, check MUSCOM's admissions website - they give props to SDN as a good source for DO info!!!

http://www.com.msu.edu/admissions/evaluation.html

Understanding osteopathic medicine: If you don't know what it is, why would you apply to an osteopathic college? Start out by reading. There's a wealth of information on the Internet. Try www.osteohome.com and the Student Doctor Network at http://www.studentdoctor.net/index.asp When you think you have a basic understanding of the philosophy, then go out and do some active learning.

this thread should now be closed to further comments 😛

Even some of the OPs comments like "good fit" for this school and "just the average joe" make a lot of sense, in context.

And, while he may have a little more difficulty matching certain specialties, it's not all doom and gloom. I heard that the D.O. neurosurgery programs are only 5 years long, and they very well may be easier to match than allopathic neurosurgery.

wait, so the WHOLE time he was talking about getting into a DO school? wtf? why not post his "underdog" status in the pre-osteo forum?

to be fair i don't think we know for sure if its the DO school he got into. just going by stats its simply the most likely.

it would be nice to hear from the OP if it indeed is MSUCOM that he got into, or if not (and he/she does not need to state which specific MD school it is, since most of their average are roughly the same and would not affect OP's original argument).

He casually tossed in "Top 10" to mislead us - to make his accomplishment seem more amazing - and most of the people on this thread who have been venting their anger on me got duped, swallowing his story hook, line and sinker.

I don't give a hoot about rankings, but it is universally understood what is meant by "Top 10," and it is NOT the USNews "primary care" rankings.

Maybe the mods will now move this pile of dung thread to the Pre Osteo forum where it belongs...

Then what was his aim? Why did he say "Top 10" knowing that people would construe that to mean Harvard, etc., and not some DO school?

If he had posted without mentioning "Top 10" I would have never even responded to this thread.

Finally, he may have made the claim "once" but when questioned repeatedly he never offered any explanation for it, at least not until this recent post where he more or less is admitting it was a DO school ranked on the primary care list...he was toying with us, fooling you and others, but never fooling me.

No one cares anymore. Let it go.

 Well played, OP. Well played.

an absolutely brilliant play. with such exquisite tactics and skill and the ability to mislead hundreds of neurotic pre-meds with 3.8 GPAs/40MCAT (except detective flip26 of course), I would not be surprised if he used these same skills to swoon the interviewer at a top 10 MD institution and obtain his acceptance.

Bitter much?

I have been reading this thread for amusement value, only. But I must admit, although appearing to be a douche, flip was right. And I must also admit that the only "underdog" aspect of the story is the "Top Ten" claim. A 3.3/30 MCAT applicant to a top DO or primary care school, while great, is not "underdoggish," nor is it even surprising.

Flip, your methods are questionable, but your point is valid.

Actually, I thought he did... Everyone was going off on him, and it still didn't change his mind.

Thanks.

Admittedly my "bull**** sensor" is tweaked a bit high, but it rarely fails me. People should really be more skeptical about what gets posted on an anonymous internet forum, particularly when it doesn't add up.

Looking over the thread, the tide started to turn against the OP yesterday, although there remained a few holdouts to the bitter end, and others can only begrudgingly muster backhanded compliments like "you're still a douche, Flip, but you did get it right."

Fun and games on SDN.

Then what was his aim? Why did he say "Top 10" knowing that people would construe that to mean Harvard, etc., and not some DO school?

His aim was to basically say what he thought helped him get into medical school. I'm sorry you thought the "top 10" point was the highlight. VR much?

If he had posted without mentioning "Top 10" I would have never even responded to this thread.

He was proud of the status of his school...seriously get over it. Top 10 in primary care is top 10 in primary care.

Haha, fooling me? WTF? How do you have any idea what I thought about this thread? I figured there was something else going on here, but, unlike some people, I'm not a total @$$hole who's out to take down someone else's accomplishment. For some reason, you couldn't just let the thread die in peace. What he did is still impressive and still took a lot of hard work. He was posting about what he did that he thought helped him get through the process as encouragement to others. I'm sorry you decided that it wasn't encouraging and that you had to beat him down and call his posts "fishy".

Look, the OP was proud of his accomplishment and may have exaggerated a little bit. Does that really warrant you calling him a troll multiple times? Seriously, dude.

It's not the business of his life to answer rude posts by you.

Do you think that you somehow "won" because the OP got into a DO school?

Pretty much sums up my feelings.

I agree, and I think this thread has long outlived its usefulness. This is one of the first times I'd support a :lock::lock::lock:

Tee hee - who's getting all worked up now? Really, calm down before you hurt yourself.

The exaggeration mattered - you say he exaggerated "a little bit," and I think he totally misled people with his claim. Without the "Top 10" mention, I would have never posted in this thread.

The OP demeaned his own achievement by intentionally misleading people - nice touch, OP, putting it in the pre-allo threads, too, when it belongs in the pre-osteo forum.

Oh, and "Top 10 Primary Care?" It is a totally made up and meaningless ranking profile for schools that do not have major research funding (not that I think much of the research rankings, either). Big freaking whoopti doo for rankings, period.

Did I miss the part where the OP said he got into a DO school? Or did he say he got into a top 10 school and there are a lot of different options for that?

Seriously, people, get lives. Is this really how you entertain yourself on a Wed afternoon? Poking holes in someone's feel good story? Did you watch slumdog millionaire and try to figure out all the ways he could be cheating? r e l a x

Nicely said.

No you didn't, it's pure conjecture.

Mods:

As the "OP," can I request that this thread be closed/locked. My intention to encourage/inspire has gotten diluted in all of the negativity/personal attacks.

I am afraid it's tone has become more discouraging than encouraging, which is the opposite of what I was going for.

There are still a few people on here observant enough to know what I have said. I hope you all got something positive from my experience... cheers.

Thanks

 I think you take SDN a little too seriously, but it's all in good fun, right? Try not to lose sight of the bigger picture.

can you at least say if the school is md or DO? regardless, congrats.

Flip, after the craptastic posts you made about financial aid here: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=612358 which are full of misinformation and FUD I wouldn't, nor should anyone else, trust anything you ever say. It took the effort of multiple people in that thread to counter all your BS with actual facts (with references) and yet you are attacking someone because you feel that his idea of a top 10 school isn't up to par with what you consider a top 10 school. Do yourself a favor, turn the spotlight on yourself for a while and try some critical self evaluation.

Note: Some of this is assuming that the DO school was the one the OP was accepted to. If that is not the case then flip is just that much more in the wrong, which is still very likely because the assumption is based on flip's interpretation. From the above linked post you can easily see that his ability in that area is sorely lacking.

I stand by every post I made on that thread.

Reading some of your posts, you don't seem well informed. Get a few more posts under your belt, cowboy, and make a real contribution to SDN instead of attacking me or anybody else.

Yes, it was totally in fun.

Some of the people around here are really uptight, in addition to being very gullible.

Point out where I have said something that is wrong. I have pointed out where you posted misinformation and were called on it. All I see in your posts is fear mongering. Here's another example from quite some time ago (trends anyone?): http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=508915 where you went after someone who had much more knowledge on the subject than you and anyone can see how wrong you were. Maybe you aren't doing this on purpose and you really are this incompetent. If you somehow make it to/through medical school (doubtful when the adcoms or your classmates get a feel for you) then I hope you at least realize backing up your statements with some evidence is important (see your assertion about my post history above for an example of what not to do).

That big hat you are wearing on your head is a little too tight.

Take it off and give your brain a chance...

👍 The sum total of your contributions to these boards is why people are attacking you, regardless of whether or not the OP's claims/suggestions that he actually got into a top 10 research school with a rather ordinary application are actually true.
