So my goal is to major in PPE (politics, philosophy, and economics) while staying on a pre-med track? I know that this can be done, but I'm worried I'll have trouble fitting all my classes in my schedule.

I took biology my freshman year, am planning to take chemistry my sophomore year, o-chem sophomore summer, physics junior year, and biochem senior year. If I do this, I'll have to wait until AFTER I graduate to be able to apply to Dental School correct?

Also, what do most people do if they take a GAP year between undergrad studies and dental school?

cheers, me

You do not have to have all your pre-reqs finished before you apply, but you need to have all of them completed before you matriculate in d-school. While it is not necessary to have them completed, you really need do well on the few sciences classes you will have to prove you can handle the load of science classes you will have in d-school.

As for the year time frame that some people have between graduating and entering d-school, it really varies depeding on a person's circumstances and goals:

1. Work to pay bills
2. take pos-bac classes to increase GPA or finish re-reqs
3. work on a master's degree
4. work to pad their application with experience in the dental field
5. My favorite - sit on the beach of a Jamacan island sipping on a Mai Tai waiting for the letters of acceptance to roll in!

I am sure there are more, but these are just a few examples.

Some D-schools are pretty particular, mandating that applicants have all pre-requisites completed at least before they call you for an interview. Check this out with the schools you intend to throw your money in for.

For the most part, as long as you have all your prereq done before you matriculate, you are fine. However, if you want to apply at the end of your junior year, you might want to consider taking some of the important prereqs like biochemistry before you take the DAT since that will definitely help with your DAT. That way, you can hold off prereq like physics in your senior year since DAT doesnt have much physics anyways.

your plan is totally fine. you don't have to finish physics or biochem until senior year. as long as you take your DAT by summer after junior year and apply then you will NOT have to take a year off. 😀
