This is a medical school interview, not a fashion contest. Look professional and you'll be fine. I'm of the opinion that what you wear can't help you, but it can definitely hurt you.

A full Windsor is the only way to go.
There is nothing wrong with the basic four in hand Knot. If that's what you know, go with it. Most of the male applicants will have done this. Those of us who have lived in the tie wearing world will notice if you manage one of the more complicated knots, and that may lead to a subconscious bonus point, but if you don't know how to do it go with what you know.
The most important things are don't go with a tie that's way too wide, way too thin, tied way too short, or made of an unconventional material such as hemp or leather. No clip ons - we can tell. Nothing with words, animals, cartoon characters, sports logos or holiday themes. And unless you are from the southwest and interviewing in the southwest a bolo is not an acceptable alternative.

I had to google what a bolo was.
Are you being a little tongue in cheek?
I mean, are you serious that a bolo can be an acceptable alternative for a professional job interview? Even in the southwest? I can't claim to be hip to southwest culture. It just looks like the only time you would wear it for an interview would be if you were interviewing to cowboy sheep on the side of old Brokeback Mountain.
One of these days, I will compile the most neurotic questions asked by premeds.
That might be as long as an encyclopedia when it's all said and done.

I love dogs and am planning on wearing my tie with patterned greyhounds on it. Is that actually unacceptable? I can't imagine anyone would care.
I need something to do in retirement as a 29 year old woman is too much trouble and a Porsche is to expensive
Great, now I have to clean up the coffee I spit on my monitor, thanks.
Does that mean I should leave the washboard tie at home? There is nothing wrong with the basic four in hand Knot. If that's what you know, go with it. Most of the male applicants will have done this. You mean you think 29 year isnt too much trouble?
Oh no the coffee bit was from me laughing.
The 29 year old I'd probably avoid like the plague; can't say the same about the Porsche though.
He could easily have reversed which was too expensive/too much trouble...You mean you think 29 year isnt too much trouble?
If you google it you'll see that there's actually quite a lot of internet debate as to whether this is acceptable business attire in the West/Southwest, with many business people embracing the idea. I'm weighing in and saying it's not a good idea for med school interviews unless you are in a pocket of the country where this passes as dressy.I had to google what a bolo was.

The lost "KnightRider episode"...Oh, I disagree, you can always ditch a car and never ever worry about it calling you at 3:00am drunk
I saw all of these last year alone (including a wooden bow tie) and worse. The most important things are don't go with a tie that's way too wide, way too thin, tied way too short, or made of an unconventional material such as hemp or leather. Any manner that leaves you still able to breathe will be OK.
Seriously, take two of these:
Now go read my post on guide to interviews.

Hi guys,
So I got my first interview in September and I'm curious about how to tie my tie. Windsor? Half Windsor? Something more complex?
What do you guys think?
Thanx!
I need something to do in retirement as a 29 year old woman is too much trouble and a Porsche is too expensive
I can agree with the first part of your sentence, but have to assert that a Porsche is so worth it! Fun, fun, fun to drive --
(and lower maintenance than most 29 y.o.)

Random woman's opinion: I dislike large knots for men's ties
Totally depends on the collar involved.Random woman's opinion: I dislike large knots for men's ties
Even those big, bulbous knots? I still think they look awful 😉Totally depends on the collar involved.

Well a 29 year old can be fun to drive as well, providing a much smoother ride but that is an entirely different set of circumstances.

@JustAPhD most likely has to clean off his computer screen again
*Sigh* yeah.
But hey, I'm a simple man of compromise. No reason the 29yo can't be in the car with me.
This thread has deviated in a spectacular fashion.

I can be the driver while you two can enjoy yourselves in the backseat

I am driving this line of commentary down another road as I have taken a rather sharp turn into something else.
Not to mention what can be done with the tie. 😉 What kind of knots do you like to use?
This thread took an unexpected, kinky turn.
Totally depends on the collar involved.
Because I read this right after some flirty posts, I had a totally different type of collar pictured
I could do without the attendant nipple clamps, personally.
Anyway, this would not be the sort of "professional" collar that L2D is talking about.

After the whole 50 Shades thing blew up, the sale of grey silk ties went through the roof.
I suggest guys, if your first name is Christian, or your last name Grey, consider a different color tie.
As long as this was completely under your shirt and tie, you could probably get away with it.Because I read this right after some flirty posts, I had a totally different type of collar pictured

I'd love to see a compendium of worst visual and verbal choices by intervieweesI saw all of these last year alone (including a wooden bow tie) and worse.
I have an encyclopedic registry.I'd love to see a compendium of worst visual and verbal choices by interviewees
The top few visuals include a silver ice skating catsuit and mariachi regalia.
Lighting up a cigarette isn't verbal but it does deserve a special place in the registry.
No bow tie love here?
Bow ties are allowed but know you are going to both stand out and may project a Poindexter/Urkel image, which isn't always what you are going for when trying to show you are a "good fit". But it's not unprofessional and lots of doctors who don't like their ties dragging in MRSA wear them.No bow tie love here?

Someday you should write a book. It would be an absolutely hilarious best seller. I so wish your hands weren't tied so you could tell us all the details about these stories.I have an encyclopedic registry.

The woman wore a silver white catsuit (with a broad sheer "V" from shoulders to umbilicus) on her interview day.someone wore a glitter catsuit and a mariachi suit? or they showed you a picture during the interview?
The mariachi had everything but the acordeón.
But if you want to know where you're going, you have to know where you've been!
Your turn.
Your turn.

You're making this up!!!!

I swear, you could get a paper into a medical education journal (or one of pathological psychology) with case reports like these!

I'm just floored here.......so at any point does someone sit them down and give them the "what the hell" talk? or do you just wash your hands of them and laugh over drinks later? The woman wore a silver white catsuit (with a broad sheer "V" from shoulders to umbilicus) on her interview day.

The woman went on to attend another fine medical school (far from here). I have to imagine that it was too cold to wear the catsuit (or maybe she put on a jacket?).I'm just floored here.......so at any point does someone sit them down and give them the "what the hell" talk? or do you just wash your hands of them and laugh over drinks later?
I have no idea where the other fellow went.
As far as I know, no one mentioned the aberrant dress to either of them.

I dunno for sure...but I keep visualizing this. Could it be? 🙄The woman wore a silver white catsuit (with a broad sheer "V" from shoulders to umbilicus) on her interview day.
