I know this Q has been asked a 1000 times but I was just curious, gearing it more toward married MS III's and ones with kids. Our school has set up 3rd year rots all over the place in the S.E. literally. How often do you get home to see your family on typical 1 month rotations i.e. IM, Ob/GYN/FP? Do you have weekends off? Afternoons? Have to sleep near the hospital a lot (assuming you are 1-2 hours away from your home). Just getting prepared....

Thanks,

Some rotations you will have no evening or weekend commitment. Another option if you have a wedding or other event is to take a month off and make up that time over a winter break or some other way. You can likely work with your schools clinical education department to make this happen.

Some rotations, however, you will work like a resident...call (even on weekends), nights, evenings...

As per MOST schools policies students are not required to attend rotations on business days that the main school is closed. This includes holidays. But I have worked some holidays, though not required, in order to show my face...or just because I had nothing better to do (insert pathetic face here!)

Its tough but somehow we all find time to manage family and personal matters. Im not going to lie, many of the married-with-small-kids people in my class have tough decisions on where and when they can go places and where they can apply for residency. I guess it all comes down to what short term sacrafices are you willing to make (and CAN you make) for the long term goal.

Thanks JP. Since I am at GA-PCOM and we do EVERYTHING you guys do right down to climate control (controlled in Philly, no joke) I am assuming that we will have the holidays off as well if you did.
