time off/changing programs

I'm about 6 weeks into EM 2 and I might need to take time off (on the order of months) in order to save my marriage. Not sure I will want to return to my current program. Does anyone have experience with taking time off during EM residency, or changing to a different program after time away? I don't know anyone who has tried to do this.

I'm constantly amazed at the number of people who come on to SDN and post stories about situations like yours where the first time they sat down to talk to the PD about it was the day they handed in their resignation letter. And then they wonder why they can't get another position down the road since they were such good students/residents before they up and quit. Get your PD on board now and things are likely (no guarantees here) go more smoothly now and in the future, at least as far as your career is concerned.
