A little announcement:

I will be away from the forums between July 1 and approximately August 10. I am leaving them in the capable hands of Pilot Doc (who is our newest Advisor) and of course, all of the regular users here who provide such good advice to the newbies and each other.

My PM capability will be turned off, but the above users can reach me via email if need be.

All my best and please keep things in order until I come back!

That's totally inappropriate. It's lewd, lascivius, salacious, outrageous! Why was I not offered the position of advisor? This is bullsh*t.

Time off?? What kind of nonsense is this!? Didn't you just become an attending? As in a real surgeon? I thought real surgeons didn't ever take time off!

j/k--enjoy your free time! 😉

Staying away from the forums will put your self-discipline to the test. Hope you can do it!

J/K We'll will miss your honest/thoughtful/insightful input. 👍

Since I don't have my hospital credentials yet, I can't work until I do...so figured I'd take this opportunity to have a real vacation (although I do have to do some moonlighting to pay my bills since the cat refuses to get a job).

After that, hard core...no vacations for me...like a real surgeon!!

Rats, my post was totally predicated on you already being gone . . . oh well, busted again. 😀

I'll be keeping my eye out for you...just because I'm taking a sabbatical from posting doesn't mean I can't READ the forums (although I am going to try and have some willpower not to) and see what trouble you're causing!😉

Wow, first day of the "sabbatical" and here you are. 😉

My ornriness is directly proportional to my mood. Given that I just started internship today, one would imagine that I will shortly be on "Probation" again in the next couple of weeks.

And I swear to God, if the MSIV on my service doesn't start communicating with me, I'm going to really lose it . . .

We might have to have an "extenuating circumstances" for the first few days of internship in regards to SDN punishments!😀

At least your 4th year student isn't telling you how to manage patients (yet).🙄

You too?

Have a nice vaca Kim.

I'm trying not to be a jerk, but I mean, if you want to match into something as competitve as neurosurg, wouldn't you go to great lengths to be a team player, even with the intern who has no say in your eval?

I show up to round with the team a few days before I come on, and he totally says nothing to me. Then rounds end and he's off to surgery without mentioning to me who he's been seeing, anything like that. I would have appreciated some kind of head's up on how he's been working, a little insight into his patients, and a general impression of how the team works. But no, just gone.

Then I go in this weekend, where all we do is round in the morning and go home, and he doesn't come in either day. Wow.

So now what? Come Monday, I'm just going to have to pretend like he's not there. And believe me, I'll be in way earlier than he will, and odds are I'll drop notes on all his patients before he even gets out of bed.

Will this matter at all? Probably not. Evals have little to do with intern input, especially this early in the year. And lord knows I'm not interested in screwing anyone over and so would never complain. But suppose a couple weeks from now when the residents are doing his eval, maybe they'll ask, "Hey, what did you think of the sub-i?" What do you think I'll have to say?

"I have no idea, I didn't really see much of him."

Certainly not how I worked on my Ortho rotations, I gotta tell you.

Chill out, buddy.

You've only been a doctor for a couple days. Don't be so quick to get aggressive and antagonistic. It can end up making you look bad, and right now impressions are everything.

Anyway, with all the other big things going on with you right now, don't let an aloof med students get your panties all in a bunch.

The best way to survive this stressful time is to be able to adapt and roll with things. You can't get upset and obsess over little things, or you'll be miserable, and it will show to your co-residents.

I'm not talking to you from my lofty perch as a PGY-2, I'm talking to you as a person who is also somewhat prone to aggressiveness and antagonism. Your actions can get you in a lot of trouble on this new playing field.

I'm frustrated, because I feel like I desperately need help, especially from a "non-threatening" source like the sub-i who's been on service for...

Brings back not-so-fond memories of my intern year.

While your subI may be a thoughtless jerk, there's a decent possibility that by virtue of you being an intern, he doesn't see you as non-threatening. Or maybe he just assumes you know everything, or would ask if you wanted to know and he doesn't presume to tell you what to do. Ask him some softball question about the computers or lab draw schedule and see how he responds. He might open up.
