I'm an incoming GI fellow at an academic medical center in the Southern US. I was talking to a GI fellow at my program and he said applications for advanced fellowships such as transplant hepatology start at the beginning of 2nd year of GI fellowship (PGY 5) and occur on a rolling basis. If that is the case, my fellowship is very front-loaded so I doubt I could get any decent research publications in before applications are due....

What is the approximate timeline for applications for these advanced fellowships such as transplant, IBD, motility and advanced endoscopy? Why is it so damn early?

that is accurate for most part. advanced endo uses a match system and you will match by ~july 15th of your 3rd year. essentially a few months into your 1st year you start to apply. everyone has a similar issue - EVERYONE's fellowship is front loaded. dont worry about it. just worry about figuring out what you want to do. figure out what you wanna do by mid 1st year so you can plan accordingly
