Hi sdn members,

I am a first year pharmacy student trying to memorize the names, indications, class/subclass, etc for the top 200+ drugs. For a lot of drugs, I come up with silly mneumonics or stories to help me remember them. For me, all the insulins seem to be running together and I'm having trouble remembering which ones are which.

Insulin (Humilin)
Insulin glargine (Lantus)
Insulin determir (Levemir)
Insulin aspart (Novolog)
Insulin lispro (Humalog)

Any tips for remembering the name brand/generics of these drugs is greatly appreciated! If you also have a way of remember which ones are short vs long acting, that's of course welcomed too. :)

Thanks for your time!

  • The brand names of your long-acting insulins both start with "L" (as in "long") -- Lantus, Levemir
  • Levemir (brand) and detemir (generic) rhyme
  • Aspart and lispro are analogs of regular insulin -- thus novoLOG and humaLOG
  • Humulin is most similar to endogenous human insulin -- notice how "human" is almost in the brand name

Hope this helps!
