Hello! I am starting to think about how I am going to move all my stuff across the country (west to east coast) in preparation for starting dental school. I was wondering if anyone had any tips about moving, or about furnishing a new place. Any opinions or personal experiences are appreciated 🙂

Are you moving to a big city or suburbs? Will you have a car? Do you know anyone where you are moving that could help you move your stuff if you were able to get it out there? If your car/SUV/truck can tow a trailer, and you're comfortable driving one, renting one from uhaul might be a good way to go about getting some of your furniture to your new home. If not, I might opt just to buy some cheap furniture from places like IKEA, have it mail ordered to your house, and then assemble it there.

In terms of finding a place to live, that can be tough from the other side of the country. Again, if you knew someone there you could ask them to scope out places for you. Otherwise, I might lean towards renting from an apartment complex which has dozens of identical units, and doing as much research as you can online about the management company/property. That seems like a safer bet than trying to rent out part of a duplex having only seen craigslist photos.

Thank you for your super detailed reply!! I will not be driving, I'll be flying over to the east coast, living in a big city. I was planning to throw as much of my personal belongings as possible into some large luggages and then somehow shipping the rest over. But the problem is that shipping can be quite expensive. I'm not sure if it's worth the shipping, or if I am better off just buying new things when I arrive.

Luckily I have found a place and roommate already so that aspect has been sorted out 😀

I'm doing the exact opposite move - east coast to west coast (2,106mi to be exact). The cheapest way I have figured out is that I am going to drive my car and stuff it with as much as a I can. My father is going to rent a small, 12ft truck and fit as much furniture as he can in it for a one-way trip. We are hoping to do the drive in 3 days, so that will be 2 nights in a hotel. He is then going to fly back after I get situated in my new apartment. Any furniture that I can't fit I'm going to either thrift or buy from like IKEA. The major costs are obviously the one way fee for a truck, two nights in a hotel, his plane ticket back home, and any furniture that will need to be bought.
