I am just starting the second year and have been reflecting on what study methods worked best for me last year. I am curious to hear some of your thoughts for what works best for you during lecture.

I found that focusing well during lecture helped out a bunch- learning things the first time through cut down on my review time a lot.

I also tried to identify the key points each lecture by focusing on what the professor emphasized or spent the most time on during the lecture. Sometimes the professor will say key phrases like "this is really important" or "you really need to know this." Sometimes the emphasis was more subtle, depending on the professor. I would highlight those points and make sure I knew them well.

What tips or tricks do you use during lectures to make sure you're getting the most out of them as possible?

Skip it and study on your own.

I always thought taking notes - not writing novels in the margins - kept me more engaged and likely to remember more. Unfortunately, there's a lot to the folks already telling you to go learn it on your own - scientific studies show we remember very small percentages of material that is told to us unfortunately.

during lecture I had to put my computer away so I actually paid attention. I'd read the syllabus as they were lecturing, underlining the key points and writing in any clarifications that I felt were needed.

that should be more than enough. if it wasn't sufficient, I'd look in a secondary source for clarification.

um LOL

That's really all you need to know about med school lectures.

This. Remember anatomy lecture? Brb sitting in a room 4 hours while a guy points to structures in netters and reads the name...

Yeah man I could never do that on my own

I read scribe notes for my lectures and did better in my classes than when I went to lecture. I'm not an auditory learner.

this is the most important thing. print the slides out beforehand and put away the computer. also don't take notes obsessively ...be selective about what you write down because when you're writing you might be missing a more important point

I would pre-read the topics if time permitted, and if not at least skim to find out the really confusing stuff. I had pretty good professors that would do better explaining things than the book sometimes, so that way in lecture I knew when to really focus intently.... I can't be super focused for 1.5 hours straight but I can tune in for 2x15minute bits that I know I won't get with the book.

I guess many things lecturer talks about are actually just filling quote, except "you must know" tips. Good way is to underline in textbook ,and write those tips & tricks on stickynote or margin.
The best way is to study on your own, but sometimes you get those tips and tricks on exam. I've failed once becouse of this.
