Congrats to those who are accepted! I received an invitation for interview from SA today. First interview ever, please give me some advice on how to be successful.
Just relax and be personable. Know your application. Practice the obvious questions

Just got back from my Houston interview today. Dr. Pierpont let us know that they sent out about 70 offers (which he expects to fill half of the class), and he will send out the rest after people have declined their seats to Houston. He said they interview around 280 students, and they still need to interview 120... So there's still HOPE for all of you guys with no invites!!!

FINALLY got an interview with Houston for the 17th of December. any advice specific to Houston? I've read all the info about the interview on this page but was wondering if there was anything I might be missing... I was mainly worried about my DAT so if I got an interview does that mean they think my numbers are fine and I just need to do well in the interview(assuming all my community service and other parts of the application are fine) and I should have a decent shot at getting in?

If I do well and they decide to accept me does anyone know about when the next set of acceptances come out? I was planning on studying for DAT over the break but don't want to waste time if I don't have to.

As far as I understand, if you are invited for an interview, they like what they see "on paper" and they want to see how you are socially. They believe you can be successful academically, they want to see if your communication skills are up to par. I wouldn't go in with any insecurities about your scores.

Simply curious...Do you mind posting your scores??

I would start studying now, that way if they do ask you can say that you are currently studying to improve your score. Sounds better than just a plan to study. If your score is low enough they may ask why you haven't retaken the DAT already.

Ask them if they think you need to retake to be competitive. I wouldn't come off self conscious about it, just flexible and open to suggestion. Just because you got the interview doesn't necessarily mean it's an even playing field. You should get a good feel during the interview of whether you need to retake or not.

I am really hoping for an interview since this is the only school in Texas I haven't interviewed at and its the alma mater of my dentist (they should hire him as an advertisement specialist!)

Did you get accepted to any of the other Tx schools you interviewed at?

Closed file. All they have is your personal statement, and they'll have read it. Group your. No clue about the other stuff.

It's a very easy interview. Know your PS since that's all you'll be talking about. My interviewer also grilled me a bit, just trying to see if I was up to the challenge...it appears I did well enough.

thanks! i thought I read somewhere that the faculty member has the personal statement while the student interviewer has your file, but since you said it is closed file then what did the student interviewer talk to you about? also about how many other students were in the group with you? also did you take amything wit you? notepad? pictures?

Just wanted to tell everyone who interviewed or have an interview coming up to not give up hope. It REALLLY is not over until end of April/May. It's going to be a rough a few months, but many of you will make it this cycle!
SA and Houston continue to accept on a rolling basis. For people waiting on Baylor, they are probably pretty close to done for the cycle, but it's not over yet!

SA gives you a cute little notepad to use. Didn't bring anything.

The student interviewer might have had my file, but he/she didn't read it if so. He/she asked if I had questions, so we chatted for 30 mins. It was very low key.

When will Houston start giving out more offers?

I would say the next batch of acceptances will probably go out mid to end of january, so time to relax until. There will be no movement until after the holidays because schools wait for the first batchers to respond and plus it's that time of the year when no one really wants to work lol

Yeah I figured, I was accepted at Baylor but I really liked Houston and didn't get an offer from them on Dec. 2nd. What is your opinion of the two schools?

Are the schools only sending out acceptances from now on (from the pool of wait-listed people), or are they still sending out interview invites?

Thank you.

It was not clear in a few of the above posts - which led me to believe they were only going through their wait-listed interviewees.
Well I think Baylor is done with interviews, and SA is probably nearly done, but Houston still has them through the end of July. So, when the next round comes out, who knows? At least after 1/2/14 or so.

seems like we are going to the same school (uta)
You will be fine at houston. There is only 1 interviewer, so do not stress out
we never know what will happen in future, so believe in yourself.
you have to believe in yourself so that other people can also believe in you too.

btw, 3 interviews ( bay+hou = sept, san=dec) . now continue to wait, wait, wait...................., + finals .
so stressful. pimple start to grow more lol. anyone on the same boat?

Hey like anyone would say both are great. Baylor and Houston students can elaborate more on each, but the vibe I have gotten from what I hear is that Houston is more laid back than SA and Baylor. Baylor has a lot of lab work, so that could be positive or negative- whichever way you want to look at! If Houston is indeed more "laid back" I wouldn't say that's a bad thing. Being a dental student, I definitely wouldn't mind that quality in a school because I am sure you become a competent at any of the three texas schools! Again, someone who goes to either of those schools can give you a better insight on each, but if you have any questions about SA, I can answer those!
Thank you.

SA also interviews in Jan. When they stop sending out invites for Jan interviews, that I don't know. But if I recall correctly from last year, some people received SA interviews in Jan.

I still havent heard anything yet from these schools...🙁(( I guess I am out guys, so frustrated, maybe I am not competitive enough.
Gpa 3.4 sgpa 3.3 DAT 20/21/21. Volunteer, Tmom and such

Have you interviewed at any of the schools?

How many people do Houston interview in a day? I know they gave out invites today for Jan 7th. I am hoping that there is still more left.....=/

I have some hopeful new for everybody! I heard that Houston only gave around 30 first round acceptances this year. A friend of my interviewed at Houston yesterday, and one of the dean's said that this year they gave out the lowest number of first round acceptances this year than they ever have in the past. I guess they want to give everyone, even people who applied late, a chance!

Ha they're tired of wasting time sending acceptances to people who prefer to go to Baylor! 🙂

Keep your heads up guys, still plenty of spots open

I never really understood their strategy here...They 1. Don't come close to filling the class early and 2. Don't offer scholarships until fall of D1.

San Antonio scholarship offer came via e-mail today.

Nice! Big decision to make. I was taking today with a SA grad who is a pedo resident at Baylor and we were talking about some differences that he's noticed. He said that although Baylor does a lot a surgery he thought they do more. However they do a ton of gigantic amalgam restorations with pins whereas at Baylor we'll just do a crown.

They also don't do many 2 surface restorations for interproximal lesions. For example for distal decay on #29 they would always do slot prep on the distal (1 surface, bonded amalgam or composite) whereas Baylor will more often make it a DO (2 surface), but not always.

Well, I don't know what most of those things mean, but good to know 😀 This definitely complicates things...ugh.

Oh god I hope we still have a chance to interview for Houston!!!! Do yall know whens the last day of the month that Houston will interview? I hope we are still not too late!!

A slot prep is also a DO because you must go through the occlusal to get to the distal. The difference is you would not extend the prep through the occlusal central groove and dovetail with a slot prep. The only way a prep is a D is if you only enter the tooth from the distal (usually when the tooth distal is missing).

How much was your scholarship for?

All right, so I was scrolling through last year's tmdsas thread and from what I gathered, last year San Antonio began their second round of acceptances beginning on January 15 and was pretty good about steadily sending more every couple of weeks. The earliest post I saw for Houston was February 4 and then another set of invites on February 28. Baylor was the worst; it was stated by administration that their second round would begin in MARCH. But I didn't see any acceptance posts on tmdsas to confirm this. So that's a time frame for second rounds based on last year's tmdsas posts. I'd be happy if someone could prove me wrong and say it's earlier though!

Any updates for January 2nd?

Interview invite for Houston on the 14th received today! Woohooo!! Finally a TX school!

^congrats! I have an interview with UTHSCSA on the 13th, that was my was first TX school. I'm from the Houston area and would love to hear from them!!

does anyone know if we should go ahead and send updated transcripts (I have grades for Fall 2013 that aren't on my app) schools? Or maybe at least to the ones who have given you an invite? Also, how long does it take to hear back that you're accepted once you interview? I know the rejection doesn't come until much later when the classes are actually full.

I had a friend who interviewed at UTHSCSA before and last year he got a professor who was not a DDS and English wasn't his first language. Nothing wrong with that, he just said it was hard to connect with that person over dental-type stuff and in general. Any advice on how to handle that situation if it happens? Maybe ask Dr. Segura for a quick impromptu interview at the end?

I am also wondering about sending in fall 2013 grades... anyone have any advice?

I interviewed with Houston on dec 17th and have and interview with San Antonio on Jan 27th and I was wondering if there was anyone out there who interviewed this late and about when they heard back on anything... Dr. Pierpont said the earliest anyone would hear anything would be the end of January but earlier someone said the earliest anyone heard from Houston was Feb 4th. any idea about when SA would send out any more acceptances?

Also does anyone know how full the classes for these schools are at this point? is being interviewed this late "bad?" I'm driving myself crazy trying to determine my chances at this point so any advice is helpful!

Also, any advice on SA interview?! I know there is an essay at the end so I was just wondering what that is all about... can anyone give me a heads up on how the day will go and any idea what the topic for the essay might be? thanks!!!

I'm in shock.... I've been waiting and clearing out my wallet for OOS interviews since early July and I finally got my first Texas interview!!! My number one... UTSD on the 21st!!

3.7something oGPA, 3.8something sGPA, 21AA 21TS 22Reading 20PAT

Oh and I'm a reapplicant that interviewed there last cycle.

Anyone else on here interviewing the same day? So excited to get the opportunity to interview at UTSD again. Wish me luck and good luck to everyone else interviewing in these last few sessions!
