I still don't understand why everyone on this site puts so much emphasis on grades. They're definitely important but they don't guarantee you an interview. Dental schools are trying to create healthcare service professionals, not mathletes.

No one is guaranteed an interview based on stats.

Because its the most objective measure...rather than whose daddy knows the dean, or went to school with him in the 80s... or grandpa donated xyz to the new building or redecorated foyer....
I do agree that interest, empathy and personality do have a place in the admissions process..but considering how sought after a Texas spot is...like...hard work gotta count for something dude..

Agreed 100%

Yeah they count for something, which is the students aptitude and ability to take in and retain information. Also the ability to work hard over an extended period of time.

But surprisingly it turns out there's more to being a dentist then just learning what parts of the teeth there are.

I'd argue that leadership, experience, good essays and letters of rec go further than grades once you get to a certain point.

Anecdotally I know quite a few people with 3.1-3.4's who got interviews, one of which applied late September. I also know of two people who had exceptional grades (3.93 and 3.97) who got rejected from every school without interview (one of them had one interview at a school and was waitlisted).

So am I saying grades don't matter? No I'm not. I had decently high grades (3.81) and I think that helped me get in, but it most definitely didn't guarantee me an interview, nothing does. These are holistic applications for a reason they really look at the individual as a whole.

They aren't necessarily trying to take the most "qualified" applicants, instead they're trying to take the students who they believe will fit a certain role in the future, especially for public schools like the Texas ones where most of the providers immediately go to work in the surrounding communities.

But maybe I'm wrong and full of baloney. Who knows I'm not an adcom.

Did you get invite for the interviews at all?

I have three letters: 2 science, 1 dentist. 150 shadowing hours. PAT/QR was lower than 18 though. applied in September. took a year off (so no updated GPA or continued education which Baylor likes)- worked in research lab. I don't know anyone who I can even email :/

Email the admissions directors at the schools and ask for an update or something. I'm not sure how much it will help though. I'm pretty sure most schools have sent out the final round of interview invites by now.

If it makes you feel better @dentalpulp i did oral cancer research for the health science center, have a 3.66 overall, 21TS,24RC (nothing below 19),600+ dental outreach hours, 1 month dental outreach in Europe, 2 years as a dental assistant and still haven't gotten ANY TX interviews.. im pretty sure it's cause my app was complete at the end of September but it's ridiculous how you basically can't get any interviews just mainly because you applied late.

I'm thankful to have Gotten 5 OOS interviews. Atleast I got some love there. Sad my own state can't give me even one.

Edit: and the admissions committee member worked in my lab and knew me lol

I didn't know you were also a TX resident!

Yeah it's a bummer that we haven't heard back from our own state schools. Are you planning to go OOS or reapply to TX next cycle?

Haha yeah I'm a TX resident. I'll go OOS! I don't really care about staying home. But the tuition is unbeatable. But it's not a factor that trumps any OOS acceptance. I'd rather go OOS than waste a year/ reapply/waste money.

Totally Agree! I saw that you are waiting on Touro! Good luck 🙂

Hey for anyone who interviewed at San Antonio around how much did you spend on Airbnb if you used that? Or did you just do the hotel option they had?

The option provided is around 80.00 not including taxes and about 5 minutes away from campus! When's the interview?🙂

If I had yet to receive any sort of interview invite from the TX schools, should I just assume that I got rejected since it's already January? Should I send some sort of letter of intent?

Interview season is pretty much over for Texas schools.

With all due respect, you don't know what you're talking about. You posted the same thing earlier and following your posts were people getting interview invitations. I don't know about A&M but the other two schools interview until the end of January, with invites being send just days prior (check previous TMDSAS threads).

Therefore, the interview season is pretty much over...
Houston's last interview is next week, if you haven't gotten an invite yet, you might want to depend on other schools.

Maybe you're right but if you look at previous TMDSAS threads, there have been people who have received invitations around this time.
