TMDSAS tanked by SciGPA by making classes NonSci rather than OthSci

They really should have counted classes that are science included, but changed them to NonSci. My sGPA dropped by a whopping 0.2. Should I e-mail them and argue about their decision?

For instance, this was Non Science to them:

Exercise and Neuromuscular Performance (4000 lvl)

Concepts of Preventative and Therapeutic Exercise Prescription (2000)

Methods of Human Nutritional Assessment (which had a lab where we did blood tests, antibody tests, lab reports, etc...)

Exercise Physiology (3000 lvl)
_____

Plus they were all under the same department: human nutrition, foods, and exercise.

Thoughts? 🙂

Remember: "Science" classes are really BCPM, i.e. biology, chemistry, physics, or math. Those classes sound like healthcare classes, and you didn't take them from a hard science department, so I am not surprised that they were not counted towards your science GPA. Texas may have different rules for classification than AMCAS, but either way I would reference the application manual if you are going to try to make a case. For comparison, most engineering classes do not even meet the AMCAS criteria for BCPM. I think you're SOL.

If these are kinesiology courses they are considered non-science per this page (scroll down to college coursework, course areas section)

I'm pretty sure they just look at the department for the course and decide from there according to that table. I tried to sneak in some psychology classes that had a heavy science curriculum but they changed any and all PSY designations to non-science. If you think you could legitimately argue your point, and it's significant, then maybe try to call them - I doubt you'll have any success though.

I kind of think that it varies based on who happens to check you app. Personally, I classified some engineering courses I took as BCPM and nothing was changed.

If TMDSAS has similar rules to AMCAS, none of those classes would be considered Science (biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics). Nutrition and exercise science classes are considered non-science. I wouldn't bother arguing; unfortunately it seems as though you were misinformed somewhere along the way.

No I was not misinformed. Exercise Phys should definitely be considered other science. How can it not? If Physiology counts, exercise phys wouldn't? The science is still the same!

TMDSAS differes in that it states that it does consider engineering classes as science classes. You should've stated all engineering classes as Science classes if that help your GPA.

If you're not worried about delaying your app, then you can appeal.

But you should have the syllabi and course descriptions if you want to appeal.

And best if you can show that those classes are cross-listed with a science/bio department.

I'll just pass...Oh well. My overall gpa went up with TX's way of not counting minuses and plusses, which helped a lot. :/

dang that sucks. i classified a ton of Kinesiology classes as science on amcas, including Exercise physiology, and they didn't change anything for me.

Oops, I was unaware of this distinction. I only applied through AMCAS. However, I do still think that any borderline class could be classified two different ways based on who happens to be checking your app.

This is not true. Nutrition is clearly indicated under "other science."

Do Control+F and type in "Nutrition" and you'll see.
