its always nice to see ur inputs....... very well thought!!
i wanna know that, shud we try to avoid training at private hospital programs coz they say although the hopsitals are well run but the teaching is poor.
thanx
I don't think you can make hard and fast rules like that. Assuming when you say "private hospital programs" you are referring to a community setting, there are many wonderful community surgery programs out there, with fantastic teaching. Just as there are many academic, university based ones with poor teaching.
Both have advantages and disadvantages and unless you are planning a career as a academic surgeon who wants to reach the upper echelon or are thinking about a competitive fellowship, I don't see a reason to specifically target all academic programs. That said, there are community programs from which people get excellent fellowships - so again, no hard and fast rules.
The process of choosing a residency program is a tough one, partly because you never really know much about a program until you're already in it. Sort of like an arranged marriage!
😉 Hopefully it works out well.
My best advice has always been to apply to a wide variety of programs - community and academic, as long as they have what you need - ie, geography, employment and educational opportunities for family (if needed), etc.
