I think in all seriousness the actual waitlists might move around the end of may...
right now they are "busy" receiving withdrawal letters
so by the time they actually go over the files, and send letters might take a couple of more weeks.....

Does anyone know if most waitlist notification comes by phone call? Clearly that's the case at Columbia, but how about other schools? I think I've read some posts about people receiving letters, but you would think that the need for quick turnaround would prompt most places to call (followed up with a letter).

I don't remember hearing May 15 is the day you get to hear about your placement on the waitlist. Schools have their own timeline. For instance, some of the UCs I know have straightout said they won't "make" a waitlist til June, which in retrospect makes sense to me since today is only when many muliple acceptance holders are strongly advised to withdraw everything minus their top choice. I can't imagine the schools will be able to update their acceptance pool so soon. No mean to discourage...but just reality. BTW, even though many schools claim they don't rank their applicants, but they really do. Why they refuse to admit this is beyond my wit.

why won't they tell me my position on the waitlist.

They don't tell the position on a waitlist because it is not set in stone.
Someone mentioned a couple of months ago that waitlists are used in order to "preserve the diversity' of the class. So if you are nummber 2 on the waitlist but number 17 is from South Dakota, and they are having too many withdrawals from that state, they may offer an acceptance to that person before you. I don't know if this is true at all.
I tend to think it also has to do with wanting it badly enough. If I am number 2 and number 17 on the list has written tons of letters, contacted everyone in the admissions office, etc., the admissions committee may think that number 17 "deserves" an acceptance more.
Of course, these are all hypotheses and we have no way of really knowing how all of this works!
