Just a random vent:

1) my headphones broke.. FML, i mean seriously.. they just stopped working in the middle of a DIT lesson and I had to stop it and go buy new headphones knocking almost an hour out of my day

2) my cat chewed up a like 3 pages in my FA.. and you know whats freaky.. it was open to the page with Pasturella :O and that page is history lol.

3) I was upward trending on UW for 3 days in a row showing real signs of improvement and then got a friggin 43% tonite on my last block.. grrrrrrrr (further analysis shows that I just got a nice sampling of questions on many things ive never seen before).

4) random question: any advice on how to keep all the fungi shape variations straight.. I keep thinking I know it, and then they show me a stain of a fungi or say @ 25 degrees this fungi looks like this and I think I know it and im always wrong.. and everytime I read why im like OMFG i knew that.. I cant seem to figure out why I get these wrong all the time

anyway, 2 1/2 weeks to go.. gnite

Fungi are a weak spot for me, but definitely remember a few key things:

Blasto - broad based buds. This has never steered me wrong on a UW question (just got one earlier today on it actually, didn't even bother reading the stem carefully, just picked Blasto and it was right).

Aspergillus - 45 degree branching, septate

vs.

Mucor - 90 degree branching, non-septate, look all smooth and glossy

Aaaand that about exhausts my available fungus identification skills at the moment.

Edit: Oh and when I was first trying to learn fungi in class, I just remembered that a captial "A", if you turn it sideways, looks like an "acute angle" sign.

yah, i think its the dimorphic fungi that are getting me more.. they seem to present the immunocompromised ones in vignettes that give them away.

Don't worry -- I'm having a rough day too... I'm reading FA neuro after a while, and every time I turn a page, I almost cry. It's taking me forever. I have less than 2 weeks to go and it's not the best feeling. Hopefully, tomorrow will be a better day 🙂

Regarding UW, I feel the random blocks are not really random, and some days you just get a bad mix of questions. Like always, learn from them and move on...

So, i wrote this whole thing about the fungi, and then I scrolled down and the poster above me literally said the EXACT same stuff, almost word for word....
So, I edited it all out. My only other advice -- Just try to separate them into different groupings -- it helps 👍

figure out which fungi are dimorphic too and what they look like at colder temps + body temp; I think blasto, histo, and coccidio are (might be missing another one), crypto isn't, and candida has germ tubes at 37 deg.
