I'm going to rewrite my PS soon and I'm considering using a reference to the legend of Faust and Goethe's Faust. Is mentioning the devil in the essay a nono? Oh, and I won't be comparing myself to the devil, or making some sort of pact with the devil to get into med school.

Seems fine to me.

Side note: Explain your sig (md app link).

Sig's from a song called "Remember the Name" by Fort Minor. For some reason, I feel these lyrics fit in well for a lot of pre-meds.

Not controversial per se, but make sure it doesn't make you sound pretentious.

Agreed. The only thing that has higher pretention risk is Chekov.

Planning on selling your soul to get into med school, eh?

You wouldn't be the first. 😉

sounds way too pseudo-intellectual to me. i wouldn't want to take the chance on my reviewer rolling his/her eyes when they read my personal statement. does faust really have that much to do with your journey to discovering why you want to be a doctor??

I'm not focusing on the part about Faust selling his soul to the devil. I'm focusing on Goethe's Faust, where Faust is driven mainly for his desire of an incarnation of an intangible, emotioinal, uhh, fulfillment with a physical, wordly satisfaction (which is why he makes a wager with the devil, because he believes that the devil can't acquise). I'm going to parallel that to my desire for a profession that uses both smarts and critical thinking skills with a desire to impact people benefically. Another thing I'd parallel is about taking pleasure in creating something wonderful and beneficial.

You only get 5,300 or so characters for the PS. It's going to be tough to explain your Faust story and still fit in enough content related to your own ambition, goals, and experiences that validate the previous two. Be careful that you don't sacrifice the main point of the PS to show off your flair for literature.

You are insane and I don't mean this is in a good way. I would reject you out of hand for a personal statement like that.
