Just curious what everyone's thoughts are on this.

Do you think it is too early to start calling programs that have not responded to applications? I have noticed a few programs that I applied to have offered spots to others but have not responded to me yet. When do you think a good time to call is? I am getting a little concerned since some places that I am interviewing at are already filling up interview spots into january.

Thanks

It is not too early.

If you want an interview at a place you haven't heard from yet you should definintely call them. Most programs have so many qualified applicants that they can't possibly offer all of them an interveiw. If you wait too long, all the interview spots may be filled.

I hope it's not too early, since I did it on Thursday🙂. I went ahead and e-mailed a program I had not heard from since I was going to be in the area for another interview. I told them when I would be around and that since I was hoping to hear back from them about an interview, I wanted to know what days they interviewed on so I could make sure to leave an open spot in my schedule.

What are you saying when you call or e-mail programs??

Basically, this is where I would like to go. Do you anticipate offering me an interview???

Verbatim from my program director: "Let them know I WANT to hear from them. We always make room for people who want to come here." If there is a top choice that you really want to interview with, why would you EVER not make every effort to make it happen? If you know that interview slots are filling up at the places you want to be, don't miss the train! We are all in a field where communication and open dialogue make the world go around - get off the email and pick up the phone! SHEESH 🙂

P.S. NOBODY will ever fault you , criticize you, or look at you in a bad light because you were proactive. In fact- they may praise you for it. It's how I landed my spot...

Better yet, try this one by phone:

"Hey there Marsha. My name is Joe and I have applied to your EM residency. I will be in the area in three weeks visiting my family and was hoping I may be able to interview with your program while I am in town. Is everything complete with my application? Thank you again for everything you have done to make this easier. I'll be at 555-2341 if you hear anything."

What did I just do there? 1) I've established contact with the coordinator and complimented her. 2) I've told her I am interested and available. 3) I told her I have family in town (ok, maybe a stretch but ALWAYS looked at as a plus). 4) I had her check my application, which may mean she has removed it from a large stack waiting to be read and put it in plain sight (or even in the program director's mailbox/desk. 5) I've given a phone number which will probably be post-it noted to my folder.

Don't be afraid - 99% of you will match. Take this time to learn the subtleties of goal-directed negotiating!!!

Worked for me!! Called a program this morning and had an interview this afternoon. Coincidence? probably but I don't care. Time to try my other top programs
