i've been considering adding a safety school i've recently considered? is it worth the extra money this late though? i've applied to about ~17 schools now. my AMCAS was verified late june

I wouldn't count on it being a "safety" or easy acceptance when you're this late, but if you've got the money, you might as well throw an application out there.

don't acceptances start coming out in just a month? so you'd be finishing their secondary about the same time you should theoretically be getting an acceptance.

17 schools is a lot....I guess it depends what schools you applied to, what your GPA/MCAT scores are and how your application looks overall.

P.S. No school can be counted on as a "Safety School." It's really a crap shoot.

As was said, no school is "truly" a safety. If your chances at a given school are better than about 1 in 10, it's pretty much a "safety" for you (which totally defeats the term "safety" but oh well...)

I agree, though, that 17 is a lot. Average applicant applies to 13 schools. How do your chances look right now w/ the schools you've applied to?

I don't think it's a big deal nor too late. I would add it.

i was actually in the same position, had 17 added and felt like adding one more school,
added Univ of Cincinnati last Thursday, got the secondary Friday and finished it in a day (very easy secondary and only $25)

By SDN standards you're waaaaaay late, but most/all august MCATers haven't even gotten their results back, so I'd say you're doing alright by normal standards.

Thank you for saying that. I have been browsing these forums the past couple of days and have been feeling pretty horrible because I only applied to 12 schools. Everybody here seems to have applied to 16+ schools! I have an above-average GPA and MCAT but mediocre EC's. We'll see how it goes.

SDN is designed to make people feel like crap.

September is not "late" to be adding a school, it is normal and only considered "late" on SDN. (I was not complete anywhere until October). Do it if it makes you feel more comfortable about your chances of getting in this year, but don't add a school that you wouldn't actually consider going to just because you want to have a "safety school" on your list.

If you're going to add, go ahead and do it ASAP. Really the only way you'd be late is if you were just submitting your AMCAS right now; you're latER, but being complete mid September isn't too bad at all.

I just added a few schools myself. The extra $400 is cheaper than having to reapply next year.

I agree with most posts here. My friend applied to med school last year literally 2 weeks before the AMCAS deadline (October) and wasn't complete until Nov/Dec and he got into med school. He had pretty average stats. I would add the school. Don't get freaked out by SDN. I've heard of a lot of ppl applying "late" and getting into med schools. You'll be fine

Very tempted to make this my sig.

it's true though, and I'm not immune to it either. I confess my heart sinks with every report of an interview invite from an applicant who was complete later than me. I've had no choice but to amend my personal "no drinking on weekdays" policy.

If your stats/essays are solid, you might even get interviews from them. I did a last-minute submission in maybe December and had two more interviews (that I ended up not needing to go to) by January.👍
