Hey Guys,

I just wanted to ask you all for advice. I took my MCAT in April and did really poorly on it, I received a 22R (PS8, VR10, BS4). My other stats are 3.65GPA, 3.3~3.4sGPA, publications, and above average EC, as well as volunteering, shadowing, research, medical missions, ext.

I officially signed up for the retake for July 14th, since I knew that raising my MCAT score would make me or break my admission process. However, I took a Gen Chem class this summer (I got a C during undergrad and decided to retake it). The class was a lot of busy work and made me neglect the MCAT's a bit due to all the work. I signed up for the July 28th date and will study hard for the next 3+ weeks. I am a little scared, since I have so much riding on this exam. Would you recommend to push it to August or is that too late? My apps are all completed and verified, just waiting for the second score before I send them all out.

I appreciate all the advice!

Thank you!

August might be too late for MD but not for DO. If you can maintain your score in VR and increase your score in BS and PS, you will be in good shape for DO. But you would have to get at least 32+ MCAT to be competitive for MD.

DO all the way, it was my first choice from Undergrad. I mean last case is the caribb, but I would absolutely hate that. I shadowed over 50 hours of DO shadow and i love it.

So august mcat is not too late?

If you are gunning for DO, a 27+ will give you a great shot. In you case, in not that difficult since your BS was so low. Again, I dont think Agust will be late if your application is already submitted.

You're fine, I took the July 16th test last year and didn't submit until the end of August bc my PS wasn't done

I am just worried this is too late and I am going to waste another year which I cant afford too.
:scared:

I would love to go to any DO school, ANY. lol

Looking into Aug 10th MCAT, so wont submit till September :/

You should submit after taking the mcat and let them know that you retook it.

Im not sure how true this is but from a lot of people say after septemeber 1st is considered late.

Nobody ever feels fully prepared for the MCAT. It's so tempting to keep pushing it back, and a lot of people make that mistake feeling like if they had another 2-3 weeks, it'll make a world of difference. It might help a little, but you need to get your MCAT in soon so you'll still be considered early. Take the July 28th MCAT, get your score in late August... and send it to AACOMAS so that you'll officially be done by early September. You'll start receiving secondaries mid-late September. Send them out ASAP and you should start receiving interview invites by October/November... which isn't too late.

There is a lot riding on your exam, but that's just the nature of the beast. It's like that for everyone. Just stay calm and do your best! You have a very good chance this cycle. 🙂

I'm right there with ya on every single part of this! 🙂

3 weeks doesn't leave you much time for unnecessary details.... buy exam kracker's and study exactly what they say! The books are small and easy to read. I'm non-trad, and took most of my prereq classes over 10 years ago. I only used exam krackers and made a 14 BS and 12 PS. Take as many AAMC practice exams as possible... stay away from PR...
exams are super hard, mess up your confidence and their books are too detail oriented. Good Luck!!

+1. Get your hands on EK Bio and Orgo. I know a guy... 🙂

I know someone that was accepted to LECOM and his application was finished in January. Don't let the predominant notion on SDN that submitting late ruins your chances. It can still be done. Don't give up hope!

This is the exception, not the rule. Of course it can be done, but I wouldn't advise anyone to wait because of one anecdote. Point is: applying late can certainly ruin your chances.

If you are submitting by the end of August you should be good for this cycle, your stats seem competitive but looks like your goal is obviously to bring the MCAT score up, so good luck friend!

You have GOT to do better on the MCAT, and especially get at least an 9-10 on the Bio section. So, considering how high stakes this is, I recommend taking in August to make sure you're fully prepared. You won't be too late for the DO application process.

Good luck!

Question!

Is it late to submit my app in october for DO schools? Im taking my mcat 1st week of september and won't get the results until oct 9...

Is this bad??? 🙁 I know deadlines aren't til later on, but do my chances of getting a interview lower?

I submitted my app was verified and sent out oct 27th of last year. I had lower stats than that, and I got into 4 schools, interviewed at 6 and I applied to 10 schools. So it can be done. But yeah, get that MCAT up.

Applying right know, got my score on the 9/11 and received a 26S. Any pointers? I would greatly appreciate any help and positive thoughts!

Congrats on the mcat improvement!

How did you do on BS this time?

Applying right now as in AACOMAS submitted just now?

No no, my AACOMAS has been verified since June and awaiting my second MCAT. I received it few weeks ago and sent out the AACOMAS to the schools and are currently battling with secondaries.

Oh, psh then you're fine.

I am just being neurotic and paranoid because everyone on SDN is talking about interviews and acceptances already. :scared:

Er...if it makes you feel any better a lot of schools told me I'll be in the "middle" of the cycle by the time my MCAT score rolls in. Yeah, I went all panicky to these people and they kindly tried to calm me down...but I hope they didn't lie to me about it 😉
