Hi all, I need help and advice regarding podiatric school application. I am post-bacc student at University of Pittsburgh and I did not really look into podiatry until recently. Amazingly I found that this is very close to what I want to do, espcially the sports medicine/orthopedic track. I have not shadowed a DPM, but my dad is an orthopedic surgeon in Asia who dealt mostly with knee joints. I am planning on applying to medical school for the fall 2009 class this summer, then I realize the application season is still not over for DPM for Fall 2008. I would actually prefer to go to a podiatry school than a ostepathic school. Should I take a shot at applying this late in the process? /or wait till next application cycle. I have a 28 MCAT (10PS, 10VB, 8BS), and a 3.5 Post bacc GPA (mostly science courses), and 2.6 udergrad GPA in engineering. I have a good 2+ years of research and 1 year of volunteering. Please help, thanks!

You have to contact the schools directly.

You are getting late in the game where most scholarships are spoken for and some schools are full to capacity, but you an probably get in somewhere. It varies year to year, but some schools just don't recieve as much interest as others do and may still have open seats. There are also some schools that haven't necessarily been adherent to their enrollment cap lately.

I'd honestly advise waiting until next cycle so you have time to learn more about the field (FYI, UPMC and West Penn Allegheny both have great pod residency programs and attending docs if you want to shadow locally). By waiting, you can also likely select from all of the schools and maybe get a scholly. Nonetheless, if you want to start this fall, you probably can somewhere... just limited selection at this point.

thanks for the info. I will probably call in to the schools to see if their class is full yet. It the ones I want to go to are already full, I might as well apply early next year

please post your findings, what schools are at capacity at this point and which are not....it would be interesting to see that kind of thing..

👍

You might still get in!

GL with your decision. Your post-bacc work suggests you will do well where/whenever you choose to begin. 👍
