Hi,
I am debating whether I should take the September 1 MCAT to boost my score. By the time I get my score back, I'll be submitting my apps in October. Is that way too late?

Your chances are significantly diminished, yes, but it's definitely not futile. Lot's of people get in every year with September MCATs.

Schools only have x number of interview invites to give out each year, so the later you apply the more people are competing for fewer slots.

A lot depends on your GPA and ECs. With a better MCAT would you still be a very "average" candidate, or do you have an outstanding app other than the MCAT right now?

If you are a good applicant don't let applying late keep you from applying at all. But if you feel like you're currently a long shot and that another year of character/EC building would be greatly beneficial then maybe you should hold off and apply the right way next year.

Edit: 100% agree with poster below me but forget to say it--if you're going to apply get that primary in soon. Remember it takes up to 4 weeks for it to get processed.

To submit your primary, yes. Get that in ASAP.

To submit secondaries...not really.

I knew someone who was submitting secondaries in late October and had a few MD acceptances. They were a 3.9/30.

My personal opinion, as a re-applicant, is that this seems late. I was in the same situation as you, maybe even a month earlier, and I went for it but it didn't turn out so well. I got on a bunch of wait lists but didn't get any love. If I had to do it over again I would postpone the MCAT for a few months, get everything down well, and get a kick ass score for next year.

This is assuming that your stats are marginal/average. If you have a 3.9 and a 30 right now but you think you can get a 35 this time around, by all means, get those applications in and get started.
