I have about two and a half years of school left until I get my bachelor's and finish my pre-reqs, and I have been thinking of changing my major from Computer Science to History. The reason is because I believe I can get better grades as a History major and I'm really trying to make a push to get into dental school. I'm in a tough situation though, It's taken me five years to get to this point as I took a couple of years off because I felt like I wasn't going anywhere in school. During that two years I worked some odd jobs and quickly moved my way up to a management position at a retailer. On top of that, I have poured all this time into my degree, so I don't know if it's wise to just give it all up. Also, the job prospects for CS are obviously much higher than History.

On the other hand, after shadowing under a dentist for a little bit, I absolutely love it. Every day is so satisfying and I would want to go to dental school regardless of which major I choose. I currently have a 2.9 gpa and I think my priority should be to bring it up. If I apply with one year of school left, the max gpa I can get with a 4.0 from here on is a 3.2, and after the last year, a 3.4. But I can definitely get a higher gpa as a history major.

So, taking all this into account, what do you guys think the best course of action would be? Thanks if you read through all of this

You will still need to do well on pre-rec which is all science courses.

Maybe look into a post bac program? Like the one at Barry. Csu Fullerton has one for non science majors that want to get into the health field

I've taken a couple of those and have gotten A's in both, so I think I'l do just fine in my pre-reqs overall. I have also taken the time of the pre reqs into account of the time required.

What you didn't mention was whether you actually like history. If you do, then make the switch. Dental schools don't really care what you major in. Plus, the CS degree itself is not really worth anything on the job market; it is the CS skills that are valuable, which you could still hone without a formal degree in case you back out of dentistry.

I never really had a burning passion for history, but yes it was always somewhat interesting to me. I'm considering it mainly because of how little units I need to get a bachelor's. You're right about the latter, but it certainly doesn't hurt to have a degree on your resume.

Most likely, adcoms will ask you about such a drastic change. The truth will not be in your favor and lying is dishonest.
However, major in whatever you are passionate about.

If you are averaging a 2.9 in history, expect to average even less majoring in computer science.

I'm thinking about switching from Computer Science to History. And I should also mention I raised it up from a 2.7 over the past year.

Oh sorry....yea good idea, no one cares about which Major u get...just get highest gpa u can.

Like others have said, your best course of action is just to make sure you achieve a higher BCP (science) GPA for dental school. Your major will have little effect on your application to dental school as long as you do well in your science classes.

It sounds like the change in major will impact you more as a backup for other jobs if you choose to pursue them besides dentistry. This is up to you and it will only affect your dental school application if this major change somehow gives you access to more science classes to complete prior to applying.
