I just can't understand why I have to have Calculus 1,2,3, and bunch of physics classes to

major in Chemistry.

I scheduled classes for fall semester with my adviser today, and I was kind of shocked.

I am going to apply to UK dental school(University of Kentucky), and they do require to take

one semester of physics class.

However, Physics is not even on DAT, and I feel like I am going to waste my money and time

taking those math and physics class to major in Chemistry.

Seriously thou, did anyone take calculus 3 to major in chem? or is it just at UK?

Hi Joelgrow. I am a biochem major (under the chem department of my college). For my major, I needed at least two semesters of calculus, either Calc I/II or Calc I/III. I ended up taking the entire calculus sequence, which came in handy later on in Physical Chemistry. The physics sequence will be useful when you take Physical Chemistry.

There is a lot more calculus and physics in chemistry then you may think. I would even recommend differential equations class. Thermo and quantum mechanics will make much more sense if you have a solid background. It sure isn't necessary for pre-dental but neither is anything passed orgo.

i graduated with a chem major B.S. and u do not need differential equations class... I took pchem 1 and 2 without linear algebra or differentials..

I took all the way up to Cal 3 and university physics 1 and 2

you could always not major in Chemistry if you don't like all the math...

what does chemistry have to with Calculus? I mean, isn't Algebra enough for Chem? I never took chem

class before

in physics, ye it kinda makes sense why I have to take Calculus as pre requirement since physics is

pretty much math.

So, do you guys think that taking Cal 1,2,3 is going to help me major in Chem? and do well in DAT

Chem sections? and Organic chem?

Thanks

It is not because i don't like math, Personally I love math.

However, I simply could not understand why I have to take all those Calculus classes

to major in Chemistry.

I thought Chem was more like Bio, like memorize stuff, not like math.

I never took chem before, so prob that is why

No chem is not like bio at all. Did you even take any physical chem course which is required for chem major? The reason you need to take Cal III is you need to know how to do partial derivative in multivariable functions and that is just beginning. Just switch the major if you don't feel comfortable with requirements.

Because chemistry involves much higher-level mathematical and physical perception. Have you taken Organic or Gen Chem 2? All of chemistry goes higher than those in physics and mathematics.

I am surprised it's only one semester, but you can avoid a calc-based physics and still get into d school. As a math major/chem minor who got into d-school, I regret taking college physics instead of university physics.

1. You should learn the mathematics and physics for knowledge. You are trying to become a healthcare professional… you must thirst for knowledge for life if you want to be a great doctor.
2. If you don't want to major in Chemistry after seeing the requirements, try Oceanography or Geology. Or even Biology. Major in whatever you want to… just kill the DAT and meet the requirements, and you'll get in.

At my school, Calc 3 becomes a pre/co-requisite to most/all of the higher level Chemistry courses. Just take Calc 3, Calc 2, etc. And work hard in them, if you truly want to major in chemistry.
