I’m curious if others experienced this; I had such a fun and social gap year to the point where starting school next month is exacerbating the fear of missing out.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m beyond excited to start on my career path, but I can’t help to wonder if there will ever be a time during the training where it would be possible to enjoy life as much as I did now. Anyone else go through something like this?

I literally just thought this the other day. I wake up go to the gym then hang with friends or go on a date then fall asleep and repeat. Couple that with the satisfaction of knowing all the hard work as a pre-med actually paid off and it's hard not to wonder if this is as good as it gets.

But then I think back to my time in the hospital watching doctors do things that might as well have been magic like organ transplants and I can't wait to start school and go to the white coat ceremony. I think enjoying our gap year was a good move, lets remember the good times of leisure when we kill med school in a few weeks!

It might not be the case right after you start, but there is a fair amount of free time during pre-clinical courses. Get a good study routine set up and you’ll definitely be able to fit some fun in.

Love your mindset! You’re right, we should be grateful for the memories and the good times we had instead of worrying whether we’d be able to have that in the future. Best of luck to you in med school
Cheers to a successful future ahead

Upcoming m2 here, who had way too much fun this summer. Time to get back to the grind...

You get thanksgiving, winter, spring, and summer break (m1). M4 there is a lot of vacation time. You do get plenty of free/vacation time in med school, its just not whenever you want, and you WILL miss out on things your family/friends are doing. I can't speak for the rest of training/life tho..

Lol no. You will never have as much free time as you do during a gap year. However, a gap year isn’t sustainable as a way of life for most anyway. If you have a job, it probably kinda sucks and if you don’t go to school then your life will just be a different kind of grind at a full time job with very limited earning potential compared to that of a physician. You’re on vacation. Enjoy it bc it’s not possible for anyone to do it forever.

Unless you’re a Kardashian.

I am nearing the end of the summer after m1, and it has been the "best" summer of my life by far. I was discussing this sad fact with my parents who are also physicians. You'll never have a time in your life which was the "best" in the same way as this gap year, but you'll have other bests along the way. Hopefully your capacity for appreciation and enjoyment of life continues to grow throughout your life.
