took the DAT yesterday and got these scores:

Bio: 19
GChem: 19
OChem: 21
RC: 18
PAT: 15
QR: 14
TS: 20
AA: 18

Clearly the PAT and QR are scores are beyond sucky. My sciGPA is 3.48 and my cumGPA is 3.5. I also have a lot of experience volunteering and working in dental offices. I applied to a lot of dental schools but the main ones I am interested in are UMDNJ, NYU, Temple, and UPenn. Obviously my chances at UPenn are beyond low, but I was wondering what you guys think about my chances at the other three. My first choice is UMDNJ and their PAT avg. is like 16.something. Do you guys think that I have a chance there? Does anyone know if any of these four schools have minimum scores they require in all sections? I tried to look at their websites and e-mailed them but haven't gotten any replies yet. Do you guys think it will be worth it to retake it in december which will be the earliest I can take it or will that be too late?

lastly, does anyone know ANYONE who has been accepted to these schools with PAT or QR scores this low?

Any comments or advice will be much appreciated.

Hey, I'm not totally sure, but from alot of my friends who are predents, or have already been accepted, they say that NYU will pretty much accept anybody. So, I would say, yes you have a chance there. Your Overall AA isn't terrible, it's just about average for some schools, if you can somehow show the schools that you're better in those bad categories than you showed, then it should help.

I heard the same thing about NYU.

I have a friend how attends NYU...he feels it's very cut-throat and wish he would have waited another year and applied again to UNC

nope guys. You are wrong about NYU. I just took my DAT and got AA19 PAT 15!

Called up NYU. They basically said that if it was 2 years ago I would be okay but this year they are looking for 18s on the PAT.

Ah, F*ck 'em 😀 . NYU isnt a total walk in the park to get in. But to say they wont take anything lower than 18 in PAT is too optimistic for them and too pessimistic for you.

you guys are so wrong about NYU. It ain't that easy.
I would be very feliz if I get into NYU, ..man,... an admission letter from any school will be greatly appreciated nowadays.. with this crazy competition

I;m going to be an ass and say that you need to retake it. One low score may be forgiveable, but two at that low of a score may be your downfall. A PAT of 15 may work, but a QR of 14 to boot is just too much. I'm a predent...not an Adcom, but if I were an ADCOM member, I would see a red flag in those two scores.

Just for your info...here are the average scores of the class of 2005 or 2006 entering the schools you listed.

UMDNJ
DAT 19.07
PAT 16.97
GPA overall 3.46
GPA Science 3.38

NYU
DAT 19
PAT 18
GPA overall 3.14
GPA Science 3.01

Temple
DAT 19.1
PAT 17.8
GPA overall 3.32
GPA Science 3.23

I posted on your duplicate thread, but i'l say it again. Call up the schools to ask. however, Drjeffrey makes a good point, those two scores will probably hurt your chances and disqualify you from certain schools off that bat. gl.

Whatever you do will be the right decision. Keep in mind that the averages listed above are just averages. Not every person getting in has those exact scores. So... that means people are getting in with lower, and some with higher. It balances it out. I have a couple of friends who have gotten in dental school in the past with 14-15 on PAT/QR. I don't necessarily think it raises any flags. I however, don't know exactly what the schools you are applying to look at. Most schools don't stress the QR too much, but they do stress RC.

Thank you everyone for being encouraging and honest. I still haven't gotten any replies to the e-mails I sent to admissions people and am trying to get in touch with them by calling. I guess I just have to accept that if I really want a better chance at dental school then I need to suck it up and take it again. What makes me so mad is that I am happy with my science scores and I have always been pretty good at math so I thought that I didn't need to worry about it too much. Basically, I spent 95% of my time studying, practicing for the science sections and did PAT last week before exam. I guess I kinda paid for that...ahh! hopefully, I will be able to pull up my science scores too along with the others instead of lowering them the second time around.

Again, thanks for everyone's comments/advice. I will update this thread when I talk to those schools so that other people who may be in a similar situation can get an idea as well.

Hey, there is another forum " Am I done w/ DAT," just take a look at its responses too bcz somone also got 15 in PAT same as me; just see what others are doing in the same situation and do whatever u think is best for u.....gdluck...

I got similar scores to yours, well a few points higher here and there, but, I got a 14 or 15 QR.

So here is my question. What if your numbers are all in the 19, 20 and 21 range and your QR is 14 or 15? Will they overlook that because of the other scores, with a GPA of 3.4?

I noticed some schools have a cut off but its usually science, PAT, or AA not QR.

This depends on the school. Out of the 11 I have applied to, 3 have told me that my low QR would be a concern. I scored 18 PAT 14 QR 23 RC 21 Bio 29 Ochem 19 Gchem 21 TS 21 AA. UNLV, OHSU and UoP (ofcourse) suggested a retake. UNLV said they wanted 19's across the board, UoP wants 20 across the board and OHSU needs all categories above a 15.

The other schools have said it shouldn't be a problem. VCU never responded.
