Hi,
I took the NBDE part I yesterday, and I'm so relieved it's over. I figured I'd post my experience for those of you who want some idea of what it's like.

I took the NBDE I the first time in July, 5 days prior to getting married (not a great scheduling decision on my part). Needless to say, with all the distractions, I didn't do as well as I wanted to on the boards, so I decided to take them again. The second time around went much much better (I obviously don't know my score yet, but I felt much better about it).

My biggest piece of advice for all of you (and I know a lot of people have already said this) is to do as many practice problems as possible. The first time around, I had taken 4 practice tests, but I hadn't really memorized all the answers. I would seriously do all the tests you have at least twice - and then redo all the questions you got wrong again.

Unlike some other posts I have seen, I really felt like there were a lot of repeat questions. Literally word for word. The first time I took it, I had recognized the repeat questions, but couldn't remember the answers in the test. So frustrating!

In terms of study materials, the decks are good, but I personally have a hard time learning without good pictures or without some sort of framework. I liked the decks because they were really portable and easy to take with you (I would take them to the gym with me to go through when working out). Definitely go through all of them, but I wouldn't dwell on every card - they give more detail than you need to know. I studied the decks a lot the first time around, but felt that when it came time to taking the test, I didn't feel that prepared.

I really liked the First Aid NBDE book. that book was not around the first time I took it, and I really felt like it was a great asset the second time. They have some great pictures - unlike the decks. It also gives you little tips on how to memorize things, which I found helpful. I felt like that book was more concise than the decks, which is a really good thing - trust me. It gives you everything you need to know. I think that the answer to 90% of the questions I got on my test yesterday were in that book.

Exams, exams, exams - that was absolutely the #1 resource. Also, wikipedia is awesome 🙂. So easy to look things up with that site!

Anyway, good luck all! Please feel free to message me if you have any questions.

I feel the same way, take as much exam questions as you can. of course, you have to know the material first 😀 anyways, i only read over 1/4 of the exams that i had and i knew i would have done a lot better if i had gone thru all the exams. wish you all luck!

Wow. Thanks for the recap. I had a very similar experience last summer. I took the test on June 9th, and my wife decided to go into pre-term labor that morning. Luckily, she didn't end up delivering until the 21st. I got my results just before the baby came: 87. I was originally sort of okay with this score, but now I have decided to re-take. I have a couple questions to ask you. If you can reply I would really appreciate it!!!!!!

1- Did you take the new format? If so, what do you think helped you prepare for those testlets? Did you use the newer decks? Pilot exams? Did you think it was tricky compared to the old format?

2- Where did you get all the exams you studied from? Did you get a bundle on CD or something? I just used the 4 most recent released exams to study for it the 1st time, and I don't think I got the most out of them.

Thanks for sharing!

Normally, you just type a topic or disease or something like that into the google search engine and it spits out like a hundred thousand links. On the first page, usually, there will be a link to Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia. Wow, that has a nice rhyme to it.

It is full of great, succinct info. So click on it and learn.
