Hello All!! I need your advice. I start P1 in the fall. Do you guys recomend to wait until the top 200 drugs are discussed in school, or is it a good idea to start studying these over the summer? I realize they do change, but how drastic do they change over a few months?(I guess that depends huh) Anyway, if you think it's a good idea to start studying them can you recomend some good flash cards, or if not, I guess I can make my own. Thanks!!

I know, I know, this topic has been discussed on previous posts!! Ok, I did a search. Its amazing what you can find out if you use the search engine!! LOL!!!!

I think they only change the list once a year from the previous years top sellers. You can make your own flash cards, or if you want to spend a few on ebay you can find some premade ones like to study for the medical and nursing boards. I wouldnt knock yourself out doing these this summer unless your school tells you to study them, maybe 5-10 a week.

Do remember to enjoy your summer 😛

Definitely 😀 I am going to enjoy this one! Maybe pick up a part time job in a pharmacy, but I will relax. Thanks for everyones responses. SDN is great when it is used properly by everyone. Even when its not thoufh, you have to appreciate freedom of speech. You guys know you like to read the posts that are filled with people with issues!! 😛 Otherwise things would get boring!

I recommend you do no studying over the summer. You have plenty of time to learn later and you will have to do so once the drugs are taught. Enjoy the summer. Studying is bad!!

Aaaaargh - I hate this. What useless (IMO) information to learn! I'd wait until you absolutely have to learn it - you might get lucky & find your school doesn't care. (Mine didn't & when I taught nobody ever wanted students to do it). So....lay on the beach, sip something cool & wet, sleep late, party late - enjoy the summer!

Thanks. This kind of advice is easy to accept 😛 I talked to my dean for a second, and I received similar advice. Time to hit the beach! Now, how can I loose twenty pounds by May 😱 😕

Don't make it a burden but definitely review them if you have the oppurtunity. Try to get a summer job working in a pharmacy would be good too

I agree. UF doesn't make you memorize top 200 drugs. You learn them by class when you get to that section because you need to know HOW they work.
Just enjoy your last summer before school. You'll probably end up interning every summer from now on.

Put that swimsuit on every morning & take a good look in the mirror from now till May. Then...just eat carrot sticks with your cool, wet beverage - leave the chips alone! 😀

I'm finishing my P1 year and we haven't even mentioned this. We are learning drugs by class, so if you're desparate for something to study, pick a class an study HOW they work (at my school we haven't worried about dosage strengths available, specific drug kinetics, ect.).
But, I would recommend taking the summer off and relaxing. You'll have plently of this later

Ohhhh.....I've finally encountered this class we've talked so much about. They gave us a list of the top 200 and their drug class--we have to look up the generic name, indication, available strengths, and common dosing frequency. Then, we have to memorize and regurgitate this info over 4 quizzes this summer. The first is next Tuesday (over the top 50), and we just got the assignment today!

Believe me, your enthusiasm will cool off sometime around 2nd or 3rd week, and you will hardly be keeping up with actually what they want you to learn 🙂

hey, im really bad with remembering drug names, im going to be p3 now... does anyone know where i can find a list of the top 200 + the class next to the names, just a list i could use to memorize?

like

lipitor- statin (or HMG CoA reductase inhibitor)
amoxicillin- antibiotic
etc...

anyone got a list like that?

(i tried google many times)

You can purchase great drug cards from www.sfirx.com. The cards get updated every year and you can purchase updates for $10 from the website. I wouldn't stress out about trying to learn the top 200 before starting classes! You have plenty of time to learn them. The best way to familiarize yourself with the drugs is through working in a retail pharmacy.

hope this helps🙂

yeah...enjoy your summer while you still have freedom! the best way to learn those is by working in a retail pharmacy. turn your brain off for a few months! 🙂

No, that is not how we learn drugs in RX school. We learn them by classs. You have to know their mechanisms of actions, the different receptor they bind to. Please take your time to relax. you will have plenty of time to learn your drugs.

Umm...No offense, but did you look at the date of this post?😱 When responding also you should not speak in absolutes. Each school is different. During our P1 year we encountered questions including brand/generic, common adult dose and indications added to exams in our Applied Pharmaceutical Care class. Certainly, this year(P2) we will learn mech of action, receptors, etc. 👍 I guess thats why in biochem, physiology and medical microbiology/immunology we study receptors, mechanism of action, and more receptors...... so that once(1 not 11 :meanie:) we look at drug action in more detail it will make sense.
