We just made our choice of elective for this coming fall..and i was just wondering if anybody have had a similar course and did it really help for therapeutics? Also is there any material online that can be useful..as i intend to do some reading over the summer...

Top 200 is a required first year course at our University. I thought it was very helpful with no pharmacy background at the time, until the Drug Mechanisms course the following semester. If you are taking it any later than the first full year, then it is likely useless beyond what you could look up on your own to find out what the top 200 are. However, you will field a lot of questions on these drugs out in the field so depending on how in-depth the course is at your school will determine it's usefulness (though as an elective you don't really want it to be another difficult course).

Our course basically consisted of the brand/generic, the forms it comes in (i.e. tablet, capsule, injection...) the most common side effects, and any applicable "pearls" that may be relevant. It is strict memorization until the drug mechs course where you can start to really understand the how's and why's.

I didn't take a course like that at my school. I did work in a retail pharmacy before starting pharmacology and therapeutics. But, since we had to learn drugs by class & mechanism of action, it didn't really help much. I recognized a name and that was it. Once you know what a drug does to the body, then the side effects are easy. I'm not very good at blatant memorization, so I'm glad I didn't have to take a class like that.
