Is it true that the very top MPH schools (i.e. Harvard, Hopkins, UNC-CH) require you to have a doctoral degree prior to applying?

I am an undergrad, and I was wondering if it's even worth applying to these schools. Thanks!

sorry if I sound rude but why in the world would you need a doctoral degree in order to apply for a masters? it's like saying that you need to graduate college to go to high school...

I think its just a misunderstanding. People with advanced degrees (MD, MSW, etc) do have a leg up in admissions for MPH degrees. But no one with a doctoral degree in public health would go back to get a masters.
Also, because the MPH is a professional degree, experience often matters more than academic qualifications.

It is true that some programs at these schools require an advanced or clinical degree. At Harvard, for example, their MPH program is geared toward professionals already in a health field (nurses, physicians, dentists, etc; or others with an advanced degree) or are in progress to such a degree. But, they do have an SM degree program for people like you, straight from undergrad with no relevant experience.

Moral of the story: do your research and make sure you know the requirements of the program you are applying for.

this is a good question. the websites make it seem like it only doctors can apply but like many have said in this forum its "geared toward" people who are already in grad school or have professional degrees. But UCSF and Stanford...you HAVE to be a PhD candidate (its a MD/MPH dual degree)...it kind of stinks. I want to know what my chances would be at harvard if it wasnt geared toward people with advance degrees (but still competitive of course)....

Yup Harvard MPH requires a Doctoral degree (such as Medical, Dentist, or JD degree). But if you have a masters and at least three years of experience then you can apply to the MPH. They do have a two year masters within the public health school, that does not require the doctoral degree or as much work experience. Johns Hopkins MPH requires at least 2 years of work experience but they also have an MHS (2 year degree)degree that does not require work experience. Anyway you should check out their websites to get the specifics...
