Hello all.

I am interested in going into psychiatry and would like to know more about what it takes to get a top psych residency like Mass General - and what it takes to get into less competitive psych residencies, like ones in rural Nebraska. What are the most important things to focus on during medical school in order to maximize my chances of securing a psych residency, especially a competitive one? I am an M1 at a mid-tier school in the Northeast, somewhere between 50 and 80 on the USNWR rankings.

You need a good step 1score for a top psych program . Around 240+ and research would be helpful . Interest in psych also helps . Less competitive ones you can get in with a 200 on step 1 with research and interest in psych .

Look at the NRMP's Charting Outcomes data to get a broad sense of what is necessary for matching generally. The people matching at the most "prestigious" programs will be at the top end of those curves. Doing away rotations as an M4 can be helpful if you don't have connections to a particular program or area already. A generally good residency application will obviously be necessary: good grades, good step scores, research, strong letters, etc. There's nothing psychiatry-specific about that.

Being a strong student and learning as much as possible is the most you can do now. If you focus on that, the other tangible things will necessarily follow.
