OK, this is purely an attempt to increase my awareness and I was hoping for some of you guys could give me your views out of your personal experience and hearsay. So what are some mid-top tier (top 30-35) IM programs where the acceptance rate for IMGs is more than zero? Eg. I know that CCF, Ohio should fulfill that category, as per my knowledge. Any others?

In the last 6 years, Hopkins has taken a few people from Ireland, a few from Cornell in Qatar, one from ?Lebanon and one from Brazil. The people from Ireland were essentially attendings in Ireland. The others were absolute superstars, some of whom had finished a residency in a different country and were chief residents there.

When you mean Hopkins do you mean The university residency or Bayview?

Thanks for your input. Any others would be appreciated as well. (It doesn't have to be amongst the top 5, but certainly a program which deserves some sort of recognition.)

FYI when people say a true top 20 program took a superstar FMG, that doesn't just mean those with stellar USMLE scores. They usually finished a few residency years in their home country, have stellar USMLEs, decent research background with publications in peer-reviewed journals and numerous impressive extracurricular activities. In addition, most of them have connections at the place they matched.
also FYI, CCF is not a top-tier IM program and doesn't count in this game.

Supposedly University of Limerick will be sending a grad directly from med school to Hopkins this year i don't know the specialty but I'm also wondering whether or not its the uni or bayview programs. It is quite common for people to say Penn when they mean Pennsy and like Mad Jack said Yale when they mean Waterbury.

i believe the OP call CCF a MID top tier program (not sure exactly what that means, but) so i don't think he thinks its a top tier program of sorts (which, frankly are out of the reach of the ordinary FMG).

It is a mid-top tier, certainly in the top 30. People bash CCF a lot here but it is actually quite a strong program IRL. Don't drink the sdn Kool-Aid.

I love how every thread on SDN now degenerates into a discussion about CCF or Emory.

Many top IM programs take 1-2 IMGs every year. But these IMGs are generally best of the best in their own countries and tend have significant research/clinical experience in the US (usually at the institution they match at).

Univ of Limerick? Really? I heard that

There once was a student from limerick,
He admitted a patient that was really sick,
as the patient coded and died,
The student just sighed,
That the shock was certainly septic.

Yes, that was made in less than 3mins.

I'm not really surprised considering that the residents in the top IM programs are mostly the cream of the crop in the US, they would do the same for IMGs.

looks like we got ourselves a genuine poet laureate in our presence....

There are some excellent programs that routinely take or at least interview superb IMGs like Mayo, UTSW, BU, Pitt-IST, Yale-Primary Care, Bayview, etc..
For places like Hopkins, MGH and BWH you must have some serious connections..

Apologies for the late response and appreciate all the feedback, especially mrheisenberg, that's exactly the kind of list I was looking for. Just to be clear, I wasn't looking for the absolute cream, hence the categorization of top-mid - a transitional category like when you go to the barber and say: "cut it medium-short". And I DO believe CCF definitely makes the top 30. Thanks anyways!

It's top tier in at least one of possible quantum multiverses for sure, just not this one

womp womp

It will, however, look impressive your your friends and family back in mother country

I know this question is a bit off topic but I didn't know where else to post. I am an Irish medical student graduating in 2016. I want to apply to residency in the US during my final year. I know some programs take applications from IMGs when they are not yet ECFMG certified and some don't. Does anyone know the best way to research this or is it just a matter of contacting the programs directly

Haha. Okay I didn't know we had such divided opinions on CCF here at SDN. I'd rather stay away from that. Thanks for the headsup though, amine2086.

Irishmedgrad2016, welcome to the class of Googling skills my friend. No one can give you the precise answer for that. Some programs mention it clearly on their websites, some don't. Some are stringent on what they say, some aren't. It all comes down to what you can manage. Since you're very early in your application process, I would advise you to plan your schedule so that you'd be certified by September 15th. If you can't make it by then, is that a big deal? Probably not (for many if not most programs). But why take a chance? There are too many variables in the match process and you would want as many as you can to be on your side. "Be safe, score a 100". Good luck.
