Topic Biology embryo development , I dont understand what a Somite is?

Hi can you please help explain to me what a somite is , I cant understand it from googling info on it still ?

Actually I just saw on DAT Destroyer that it says :


Somites are segmented blocks of tissue that form on either side of the notochord.

Somites go on to produce :

the vertebrae of the backbone

AND muscles of the Axial Skeleton.

-- anything else I should know about it ?

Nope that's all you need to know. I say this because that's all I needed to know from my biology ii class this past spring semester. That's all my notes have on it too
