When would be the best time to start taking tours of med schools that I am interested in? I'm heading into my junior year and feel like it's starting to be crunch time. Would the summer time be a good time? Or better to just wait until the fall when classes start back up? Thanks!

Most people don't tour schools before being granted interviews. You will see them then.

At least for DMU, they totally welcome college and even high school kids to drop by. Students who are around for the summer usually hold the tours. There's been quite a few groups of them touring recently. Just contact the Admissions office of the schools you're interested in for more info about when they can accomodate you.

I've toured several schools in the SouthEast and got mixed results. One school was like, "what are you doing here now?" They didn't seem to care to give me the time of day. I was told "have a look around." However, the other schools I visited were super nice and treated me to the grand tours. I would say, go for it if it isn't out of your way. You will certainly get an idea of what sort of schools your looking at. Are they nice and helpful to everyone, or only those stellar applicants who show up for interviews? As it turns out, I'll be a pretty decent applicant, so that school that treated me like a no-body should have probably been a little nicer -- too late now. 🙄

As was mentioned before, most people do wait until interview time to visit the medical schools. Personally, I had the opportunity to visit several medical schools before interview time through their Open Houses. While I was fortunate enough to have a wonderful pre-med program which organized and funded these trips for us, I am almost positive that when the schools host open houses, anyone can go, not just groups of students through a school. I would definitely check them out. I received a lot of great information through these events and would recommend them to everyone. In terms of DO schools, I know that UMDNJ-SOM and PCOM both have wonderful open houses..they were 2 of the best I attended. 😛

I attended an open house for MSUCOM. It was a wonderful event and the school treated the vistiors like each individual had already been accepted to their program! I'd say to watch for advertisements on open house @ each school, and choose which one(s) you'd like to attend. good luck!! :luck:

You should certainly check with your premed program/club. If they aren't organizing trips to regional schools, then you should be running for office to change that policy.

Here at TCOM, we welcome student tours. If you call (or email) the admissions office (I can't think of the number right now, but it's listed on our website: www.hsc.unt.edu), they will set you up with a 1st or 2nd years student to sit in on classes, etc. Occasionally, you can even stay overnight with that student if they volunteer their home.

It's never too early to think about your future.

Best of luck,

Jonethan De.

That would be neat! I actually toured TCOM and loved the campus. The way they treat you, makes you want to stay at the campus! 🙂 I forgot the guys name but he said he was the director of admissions or dir. of student services?? That gave me the tour! They were really nice people. I loved the campus and they are my top choice. I just hope I make it in.

I think you should go take a tour if you can.
