Touro - Cali 2009 applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I believe chances of admission are better if you choose an earlier interview date since they have less people to compare you with. Just a heads up for you guys. Congrats to those who received invites!

Did you guys utilize only the allotted spaces to type in your responses for the questions of 1)why you wanted to attend touro and 2)the challenge pharmacists will enounter in the future..etc? My answers tend to run much longer than the spaces provided. Just wondering..

I just got my supplemental application in the mail (9/16) though I haven't checked the mail in like 3-4 days. I will work on it after I submit my other supplementals since it's not due until February.

For those who obtained an interview invite, when is the first interview date? Did they let you know a couple weeks in advance? Thanks in advance!

I called in today and they said the first available date was 10/16 so I am scheduled for then. 🙂

Hello Touro applicants,

I am a current Touro pharmacy student and would be happy to give anyone here advice or answer any questions about the program.

I want to warn all of you, as stated earlier, Touro requires a $2000 deposit if you're accepted into the program and they only give you two weeks to reply. This is their way of making easy money; I'm not a fan of it. In addition, take a good look at the school's curriculum. They place a heavy focus on their social sciences program. Personally, I think this takes away from the education I've received so far at the school. They place too much emphasis on social sciences and not enough on pharmaceutical/medicinal sciences. This is the fault of the dean of the school as well as several faculty members.

You have been warned.

Thank you for the warning. I really hope I don't have to attend Touro.

All I am suggesting is you look over the curriculum, perhaps even talk to the dean. Know what you're getting yourself into before you begin. This applies to every program out there.

Thanks for the warning, but aside from that, what do you like the most about Touro?

There are a few great teachers here and I am a fan of the 2+2. Sometimes you have to take the good with the bad.

Touro is still too new of a program with too much bs going on. All of the students are making the most of it but there are a lot of complaints. Ten years from now, sure.. it will probably be a great school with lots of cool cancer research. Just my opinion guys!

heh...well, i'll keep that in mind...although, I don't mind where I am going...as long as I become a pharmacist at the end. =]

I have met several Touro students as we are hosting interns where I work. Every one of them has said they love the program, the teachers, etc. ViagraPlease has a strong opinion, but it's only one, and he's right in saying you should do your research before you enter any program. Not every person is going to fit into every pharmacy program, so it's important to see what the program is like and think about if that's what you want out of your pharmacy education. As I understand it, the Touro pharmacy students have been doing very well over the last few years at competition events against other schools (like quiz bowls or something?)

Touro's curriculum is listed on their website (http://www.tu.edu/departments.php?id=39&page=271) and it looks like "Social, Behavioral, and Administrative Sciences" is 3 of 20 units for the first semester - I assume it's similar for the other three but units aren't listed past that?

Are there other Touro students out there that want to share their opinions??

I definitely agree that you should research the program. But I had hoped of not having to attend Touro even before I read viagraplease's post. We've had the Rabbi come to our school and speak about the program (it's a religious school) and the program didn't seem to suit me. That's all.

Touro...a religious school? That's the first time I've ever heard that. please...tell me more.

I read they are affiliated with Judaism and serve Kosher food and hold sabbath.

Hmm, I'm Jewish, maybe I should apply 😀

Yes Touro is Jewish affiliated school. They hold religious ceremonies on Friday nights and have all Jewish holidays off. They do not force any other religions to practice Judaism, and it seemed they respected others for their own beliefs.

The only thing jewish about the school is their religious holidays which is a plus for the students. Other than that, sometimes I forget its even a jewish school. Along with that, I haven't yet met 1 jewish student. So the religious influence in student life is minimal or close to none.

Hey, I'm currently a P1 at Touro. To be honest, I hated coming here in the beginning because it wasn't one of my favorable choices. However, after almost 2 months since the school began, I can say that attending Touro is much better than how I expected it to be and it has a well constructed program. I love the students here and how they all come together to work and help each other. In terms of social sciences, there is a lot to read and study and the professors for social sciences are very strict. However, I don't think there is greater emphasis put on social sciences since we have social sciences only once a week whereas there are 2 biological, 3 pharmaceutical, and 2 clinical sciences a week. Social sciences also take up less % of total credits.

Besides that, I also love the fact that Touro has 2 yr didactic + 2 yr clinical program.

As kismet has said above, everyone has different views and expectations in regards to curriculum. I hope you guys look at the program carefully and make a wise decision! Good luck!!

PS- I am not Jewish and the school itself doesn't emphasize the fact that it's a Jewish school. We have many days off and also some days we get out at noon due to Jewish holidays so that's cool 🙂

Hey guys i havent submitted my pharmcas yet do u think its too late to submitt to touro............or i have still good chan ce?

for the supplemental, the electronic app has very little space for all of the shorter questions such as list your favorite extra-curricular activities. Did you all attach a separate sheet of paper for ALL of the short essay questions or only for the personal statement?

I know Touro was accepting applications until Feburary last year. Might want to double check this year; if so I think you're still in good shape.

For the personal characteristics question, do you guys just say what characteristics you have or did you tell a story? It says not to consider skills or accomplishments so I am a little confused. Thanks for your help.

I told a story for mine. Something strong about your personality that you believe will make you a good pharmacist, like you are a good listener, you work well with others, you know how to get things done. Support your assertions with a good story. This could include a personal experience with friends, or a work experience at your pharmacy.

An example of what not to write would be "I'm very academically gifted, consider my x.xx GPA, etc."

Don't rehash your PharmCAS app/resume, basically.
------------------------------------------------------

They do emphasis heavily on social sciences even though it is only one day of the week and a small percentage of your overall grade. They want to train pharmacists that know how to think critically, understand the concepts, (;D all you p1's know what i'm talking about)and work their way through problems, and not just robots that memorize facts and get stuck when they encounter a new situation.

However, I do agree that the program is very new and I have no idea how it stacks up against other more established programs. One class can be taught by 3 or 4 professors which I feel is pretty disconnected, but I don't know if other schools do it the same way. When my friends get into pharmacy schools next year, I would like to shadow when I have a day off. That would be sweet.

I e-submitted my PharmCas appl on August 20th and just received a suppl. package from Touro on Sept 17th. I air-mailed suppl. application on Sept 18th and still waiting for them. 🙁 Just to make sure, they only required 1 letter of rec. from a staff pharmacist, correct? Because I saw on their check-list that you need to submit 2 LOR from 2 different pharmacists, so I got freaked out!

I sent in 2 LOR's from professors and 1 from a pharmacist. However, requirements may have changed since last year so you might wanna double check.

I don't think they require one lor from a pharmacist. They require one from a science professor. They recommend at least one of your lors be from a pharmacist, but they don't require it. That's what it says on their PharmCAS page.

Just got a postcard saying I'm missing a letter, but I've had all three letters submitted since September.

Yeah, this is what I was talking about too. PharmCas submitted my 3 LORs, but last week I received a postcard from Touro saying that I need to submit another letter of rec. from a PHARMACIST. 😕

it's ok. it just means pharmcas hasn't mailed out your last letter. once they receive your 3rd letter, you'll get another postcard.

Pharmcas mailed out 9-02
Received Supplemental request 9-22
Mailed back Supplemental same day ...
Now on waiting mode :scared:

hey guys i got the mail from touro that i should not fill the supplemental.. 👎

whoa? what??!? details please!

yes yes! please do tell...

do you hold a bachelors?

do you make the cut off gpa?

i thought that touro mails out their supplemental based on if you meet the min gpa...

never thought that you could not get a supplemental =(

keep your head up, wait on those other pharm schools 🙂

hey guys i got the mail from touro that i should not fill the supplemental.. 👎

that sucks to hear. the same thing happened to my friend last year. she met the minimum requirements but didn't get a supplemental invite. when i was at the interview last year for touro, they said supplemental invites is the first round of screening they do to minimize the amount of supplementals they need to look at. best of luck on your other schools. there is a school out there that will want you 🙂

Just got an interview offer today 🙂 !! I have to call them to schedule an interview time.

thanks! I submitted my supplemental on 9/17. good luck!

congrats prepharm08. i submitted mine on 9/15 but they havent' received my 3rd LOR yet. so maybe i'll hear soon if they like me.

prepharm, would you share some stats?

Did anyone try to schedule any interview appointment with them today? Did you just leave your name and contact info and just waited until they called back? If so, how long did it take for them to call back?
