Touro - Cali 2009 applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So as you all know, Touro gives group interviews. They ask a lot of questions about your experiences in a pharmacy...

as a practice question, how do you guys feel about universal healthcare?

What is universal healthcare? My answer is "I don't know" i think it's okay to be honest.

This thread has been a little dead for the past week. Has anyone heard anything new lately? How were the interviews for those who had one last week? Are you all still alive? 😛

I called this morning to schedule an interview. I found out that they are closed until Thursday morning. So, I just left a message.

Yeah, the university has a Fall break from Oct 14-22. So hopefully, we'll continue to get interview invites afterwards!

Touro received pharmcas on 09/08 and supplemental on 10/03.
Received postcard on 10/10 stating file is complete.
*waiting*

hey guys! i got my interview invite today! yay! guess i'll be calling ms julie on thurs

fyi:
submitted my pharmcas for touro: 9/10
received supps: 9/29
submitted supps: 9/30
received file complete postcard: 10/6

Why are you settling to go to Touro? Did you apply anywhere else? I didn't too many good things about Touro.

Well, I actually didn't apply to any schools this year. I applied last year, and Touro gave me an Early Accept to their program back in August, so I took their offer, which is great because I don't have to worry about applications and interviews and so on.

Yup, they should continue interview invites when school resumes again next Thursday.

is it still too late to apply? am i at a big disadvantage cuz it's late. i'll be sending pharmcas on wed. i know it takes 4 weeks for them to calculate the gpa. 😳

You are actually still wayy early on time. The deadline for Touro is March 2, 2009. Just make sure you turn in your supplemental ASAP.

i've been checking my mailbox everyday, and for some reason decided not to check it today.
i just got home from work and there's this yellow envelope from touro!
interview invite letter was dated 10/08 and was postmarked 10/10.
*whew*
now i'm worried about the interview

How long does it take from the time pharmcas mail your application to hear any thing back from Touro for supplemental application invitation?

Shouldn't be too long after they receive your application from pharmcas to tell you if you qualify to submit a supplemental or not.

Did anyone else have an absolutely horrible experience interviewing here? I know I did...

What's the airport nearest to Touro University?

Oakland is the closest, San Francisco's 10 minutes farther (about an hour to Vallejo). If you're driving, carry cash; you'll go over a toll bridge on the way to Vallejo. Sacramento would be doable but it would probably be about 90 minutes from Sac to Vallejo.

How so? I interviewed about a week ago & I thought it wasn't so bad.

I basically did not like the panel format of the interview. I do not think that the interviewers were able to get a sense of our thoughts and opinions and who we really were. Also, two of the interviewers in my session were a bit rude and did not really seem interested in what we had to say. The overall experience just made me feel really down. Im glad your experience was better, though! 🙂

Do they send out rejections now? I remember someone saying a "sorry" letter was received in reference to the supplemental invite but what about after the supplemental, before an interview?

Hello
For those who got an interview, congrats! If you dont mind, can you share your stats with us? Thank you

If I am coming from SF, what time should I leave to get to Touro on time? Can anyone comment on the morning traffic on fridays? Thanks!

vallejo is only 40-45 mins away. if you go when there is traffic i dunno lol

You mean from SF? That's been my impression when driving as well (note: I speed), but Googlemaps said 51 minutes from SFO to Touro and I figured I'd err conservative in my estimates for others. Morning traffic should all be going towards SF but since I live on the other side of Vallejo I couldn't tell you for sure.

I'm not gonna drive in the morning of my interview since I hate being late. I plan to drive the day before and rent a hotel there. I do not want to risk any unpredictable circumstances such as traffic. But you can leave one or two hours early from your house if you don't want to rent a hotel.

Touro really looks for knowledge of the profession. If you say you don't know that will put you at a disadvantage. You should research universal health care, public health, and the duties of a pharmacist before having your interview.

It is not good to say "I don't know". Maybe I'm wrong but my sis got accepted to Touro-Cali (class of 2011). The interviewers gave out questions for her group to debate. She said that the interviewers liked her very much may be because of her active responses. She answered all the questions they asked include the one that she didn't know. She raised her hand to answer the questions that she knew immediately after they asked. In contrast, for the question that she didn't know, she listened to the other students' responses first and then answered that question base on those responses.

*Keys to get accept:
Active -don't wait for them to point at you to answer the question
Quick -raise your hand immediately if you know the answer
If you don't know the answer, listen to the other students' responses first & try to answer that question base on those responses.
Don't say "I don't know"
Don't be shy
Don't be quiet. They want you to talk

It sounds like fighting for something but you have to do it if you want to have a chance to get into this school.

Good luck

My sister's status:
BS in Biochem
~3.1-gpa
Few months pharm tech
82 pcat (they don't need pcat anyway)

I don't want to let you down but I want to tell you the truth. It's very hard to get accept to Touro-cali if you apply late. They still invite you to an interview if you qualify but you can only be place on the waiting list. Apply somewhere else (Nevada, Midwestern(illinoise), Sullivan, Worcester, Lecom, Regis, Florida) for backup plan.
Good luck

very helpful thanks!

Great advice but you're missing a very important key: Don't be selfish. Give others a chance, don't be the first to answer all the questions and don't try so hard to stand out from the rest of the group by outspeaking everyone. The way the interview is setup makes it obvious that they want to evaluate your ability to work with others along with hearing your answers. Just keep in mind that the interview is not a competition and all potential interviewees sitting with you in the interview can all be accepted.

Is it true that you should not skip any question??? I heard that there's both an advantage and a disadvantage when talking first? What do you guys suggest?

hey guys! i was wondering if i could get ur advice on something, or if you had been in a similar situation. i received my interview invite from touro in the mail exactly 1 week ago on Tues so I called yesterday (which was Monday), they had already closed for the Mon-Thurs Jewish Holiday or something. HOWEVER, by the time they open again on Thurs, it would have already passed the 2 week from the date the letter was dated (my letter was dated Oct 8, even though I received it on Oct 14). Do you think I can still schedule my interview? What should I do if they say no, it's already passed the 2 weeks.
But isn't it more their fault? Last week when I called on Tuesday, they were closed Mon-Thurs too, just like this week! please help?

thursday would make it only 1 day after the 2-week mark, but i think they would understand bc it's their holiday. just go ahead and contact them asap.

My interview invite was dated on Oct 2nd. I didn't call them until last thursday morning because of their holidays. I managed to schedule my interview. So, I don't think you will have a problem. Man two weeks in a row, they have monday to wednesday off.

They should be understanding but you could always leave a voicemail or send an e-mail to indicate you are interested but have been unable to reach them?

thanks guys for the advice. i will call them first thing in the morning and hopefully will be able to successfully schedule an interview. =)

For the first three interview groups, did anybody request to have their decisions emailed to them?

On Average how many black students are accepted into the Touro University Pharmacy School?

I requested to be emailed. Letters & emails are supposed to be sent out today but I don't have anything in my inbox yet!

I also emailed, and I keep checking like every 15-30 min...GAH!!

Hey guys, I just got my Acceptance email for the class of 2013...BOOYAH!

I got accepted too! 🙂

For those who got accepted, how do the interviewers actually get to know you when it's in groups of about 5? I mean how do they determine who to accept within that 1 hour when you have so little time to talk?

In the current class of 2012, we have one from Nigeria and another from Ethiopia. In the class of 2011 they have a couple from Africa as well. In terms of average I'm not sure, but I guess it depends on the amount that applies that year.

Also during my interview there were a few African students as well.

And CONGRATS to everybody that got accepted!
For our year the adcom told us that for every seat, we beat out 25 people!

Good Luck!
