Touro - Cali 2009 applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
In the current class of 2012, we have one from Nigeria and another from Ethiopia. In the class of 2011 they have a couple from Africa as well. In terms of average I'm not sure, but I guess it depends on the amount that applies that year.

Also during my interview there were a few African students as well.

And CONGRATS to everybody that got accepted!
For our year the adcom told us that for every seat, we beat out 25 people!

Good Luck!

We were told at our interview that there are ~3,000 applications per year. They grant 450-500 interviews, accept ~150, and anticipate 100 to enroll in the Fall.

Just wondering if anyone has noticed if Touro deposited their check for the supplemental? All the schools I've sent a check to deposited right away but Touro has not and it's been a month. Thanks everybody

Super Congratz to you guys!!....how quick did you guys get the acceptance letter? also when do you have to respond about accepting the school?

Our group got letters 2 weeks after the interview date. It's shorter for others though. Just depends on when the adcoms meet to discuss. Touro gives the applicant 2 weeks to decide if they will attend and put down a $2,000 deposit or opt out.

Wow this is awesome for you guys, it's like Touro is in Early Decision program. You get to know the results asap.

For those who got accepted, how do the interviewers actually get to know you when it's in groups of about 5? I mean how do they determine who to accept within that 1 hour when you have so little time to talk?

whoever stands out. be interesting, knowledgeable, sociable, and friendly. don't be a bore or an aggressive time hog.

I received my completion postcard and interview invite a week after I sent in my supplemental. They deposited my check the week after, so it took them 2 weeks from the day I sent my supp app.

Did you receive an invite? Maybe you should call them to check on your app.

For those who had their interviews, do they give you anything like a folder or pen?

They supply you with a notepad and pen.

Congrats to those who got in 👍

Hi everyone. It's been a while since I've visited these forums even though I was on here a lot last year. I'm a P2 and want to let you know that I'm definitely a Touro advocate. There are some quirks here and there, but overall this is a great place to gain a well rounded pharmacy education. After reading this entire thread I should dispel some misinformation about the deposit and supplementals.

The school does NOT do this just to get more money out of you. Supplementals aren't even sent to every applicant, which is what they'd do if they were just getting more money from you. They only send them out to those for whom it would be worth while. Bottom line is that Touro isn't going to waist their or your time and resources with an unnecessary supplemental if there is no chance of an acceptance. This makes sense. As for the $2,000 deposit, this will count as part of your Fall tuition money anyway when you start school so it is not an additional cost assuming you go here. It helps to single out the applicants who really do want to go here.

The emphasis on social sciences is not overwhelming, but one of the professors in that class sometimes is. Some professors are nice and some are hardliners. You'll see that at any school and there are things to learn from them even if you don't like their style. I'd bet my classmate had a problem with it b/c of that professor. What we're learning this year (P2) in that class is critical to evaluating and critiquing journal articles and being well prepared to do journal club presentations in our 3rd and 4th years on rotations. It's very applicable to the assignments some preceptors will give us on rotations.

At Touro I'm personally looking forward to having 2 years of clinical learning experiences. The balance of increased experiential learning vs didactic classroom learning is a huge plus for me. You have to consider what you're looking for in your education and see if Touro is a good fit for you. If it is great, if not then go where you'll be a happy and content pharmacy student. If you go to a school you don't like then you'll have a long 4 years ahead of you. Each school has great things to offer, and having participated in a few different functions where I interacted with students from USC, UCSD, UCSF, and UOP I'll say that you'll get a good education at any of these institutions, so go where you'll thrive as a student.

Good luck to everyone applying, and feel free to PM me with any questions.

For those who already got accepted, would you please give me some advices/input on the interview day? My interview is on Oct. 30th. Also, please post your stats if it's fine w/ you. Thanks! 😀

yay! finally got my email acceptance as well! 😀

As for advice on interview day, I would prepare by knowing the basic questions: why pharmacy, tell me about yourself. And make sure you know what else you'd be interested in their program other than the 2 year clerkship. They already know that this is a unique aspect to their school and everyone gives this reason, so the best advice I would give is to study up on other reasons that might be appealing to you. Also, I ended up liking the group style interview, and that was the part I was dreading. Good luck to you and I hope your experience goes just as well as mine did!

I just received my acceptance letter today! Honestly, I feel like they just want to get to know you so just be yourself. I know this is hard to do when you're nervous, but just remember that everyone is just as scared as you are. I personally liked the group interview and no one tried to be really aggressive or anything; we just all listened to one another and gave our own opinions. It was really pretty chill and the people interviewing tried really hard to be encouraging.🙂

Congrats!! It seems like a lot of people have been accepted already! Do you know how many they accept per group interview?

it all depends on the performance of the applicant. Could be all of them, could be none of them.

I just got the yellow envelope today.
I applied the end of september so it took me a month to get supplement application. I am so happy
and congratulation to people who got accepted already!
🙂

Been a while since I was in here as well, listen to what soyroger has to say, he was a big help to my class as we got our selves rolling toward orientation this last August, and I heartily concur with what he has said above.

As far as advice for the interview, reread what you posted to Pharmcas and your supplemental (the interviewers have all read it and they shouldn't know more about you than you do), otherwise just be yourself, anything else will come off as fake.
P-)

Did you guys all stay at Marriott? I'm planning to drive there since airports are an hour away anyway. I've driven to Las Vegas from LA, so only a few more hours longer.

By the way I was reading through about Universal Health Care (UHC). I find it funny that on Wikipedia arguments supporting UHC is like twice as long as against UHC.

^ The only real draw for the Marriott is the shuttle service, which you won't need since you're driving. I think you also need to pay the ridiculous Touro rate that's higher than normal to use it.

I stayed at Best Western, which is just on the other side of the freeway from the Marriott. They're literally about 300 feet away from each other. It costs almost half the Marriott rate for a clean, spacious room with a king-size bed, and you can get it even cheaper with the help of a coupon code (retailmenot.com is your friend). My favorite part of the room was the curved shower curtain rod which gives you a lot of freedom of movement. I've never seen them before, so I was really impressed. The drive from the hotel to Touro was only about 10 minutes taking the 37 freeway. I would highly recommend it. 👍

I've stayed in both the Marriott and the Best Western, both are good, BW is indeed about 1/2 the price (AAA guide prices vs Marriott discounted rate). I have also heard good things about the Ramada on Admiral Callaghan (and it is walking distance to a bunch of restaurants).

The big benifits for the Marriott are the airport shuttle and the shuttle to the school if you don't drive or rent a car.

Good luck on the interviews.

Hey guys, I stayed in Marriott. The toilet is clean & the bed is fine. They have breakfast also. I really do suggest you eat breakfast (if you are a breakfast eater) before going to the interview. Don't forget to bring a bottle of water (if your the kind of person who gets thirsty). Anyway, you'll be too nervous to eat anyway since the first thing you would do is write an essay! If you get to the hotel early on the day before and wanna eat dinner the reception guy/gurl has directions to the nearest restaurants but make sure to have directions to go back to the hotel.

In the morning, you can either use the shuttle which is ready by 8:00 or you can drive which both takes about 10 mins getting on the island. If you follow directions provided by the school you will not get lost (don't use mapquest it didn't seem right).

Other than that chill and good luck!

Does anyone have any idea about essay question? I have interview in two weeks and that will be great help.

Of course all of us who have interviewed know the essay prompts. You just have to hope somebody feels nice enough to give it to you 🙂 Even if you know the questions, the main focus is still on your ability to write, not so much what you write. They want to make sure you can communicate through writing and also they want to make sure you are actually the person who wrote your PS and Supplementals.

By any chance does any one know the upcoming interview dates? thanks.

anyone have an interview this friday? =)

It really depends on who is interviewing you. I would expect the worst in order to prepare for their interview. When I interviewed, I always had the question asked to me first, while the rest of group gets to prepare for their answer and build off of mine, which I thought was pretty unfair.

How long do you wait to receive an interview invitation after mailing your supplemental ?

does anyone have an interview on 11/20? (Thursday)
I didn't know that they don't offer interview on Sat.. I guess I have to skip my class..

In my interview, it was open to anyone who wanted to answer first. People just jumped in afterward. I do agree though, whoever went first didn't have the opportunity to build off others. I think the 4 of us were asked specific questions.

I think this is missing the point slightly though. With the exception of the ethical ones, the questions interviewers ask are generally so open-ended you could virtually say anything. They will tell you this when you go to interview so seriously consider it: The focus is 'can you communicate verbally, can you stay on topic, and can you incorporate yourself into the group setting?' Any interviewer will tell you that they can tell within the first 5-10 minutes of an interview who they like, and who they don't like. And to be honest, at Touro, they will probably have a good idea even before you interview which leads me into the best advice I can give to you guys.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this yet. You will be on campus for ~6 hours that day but the interview itself is no longer than 1 hr. Weird? No. Intentional? Yes. I've seen a lot of people saying the interview was too short to convey themselves, which wasn't fair because they didn't get to fully represent themselves, etc. Trust me, you are being evaluated the entire 6 hours you are there. This is not a 1 hr interview, it's 6 hrs you are given to paint a picture of yourself. Be polite and act like the professional you aspire to become. Going on tours, speaking with faculty and current students, and eating lunch (yes even eating lunch) adds a whole new dynamic to your interview.

I got an interview on the 20th. I really hate to call days off of work when I'm already schedule but I'm sure the pharmacist are very understanding. It really makes it hard on everyone else when the regulars calls days off. This will be my second time interviewing for Touro so hopefully i get in this time. Since I live somewhat close, it will be a good opportunity for me to continue my job and help out on the weekends while I'm attending Touro. Good luck to you all.

I sent a LOR from my calculus professor and they don't accept it as a LOR from a science faculty. They advised me to find a LOR from instructor who taught me in hard science class such as biology, chemistry ... Can't believe it....

Here what she wrote: The letter from your math professor does not count as a science faculty letter of recommendation. You need to obtain a letter from a science professor that has taught you in a hard science class, such as Chemistry, Biology, etc.

Did they send you a conformation email after scheduled an interview?

For those who interviewed 30th & 31st. Did you guys email requesting for earlier results?

anybody got news?

I interviewed on the 30th, just got my acceptance email.

:meanie:

Congrats Tankuki.

Yes they most certainly do take people from the waitlist. Being that you are a high alternate, your chances are good. During my interview we were told that if you were a high alternate you had "pretty good chances of still being offered a seat." It's just the waiting part that makes ya want to rip your hair out. Keep your head up.

Yup, Mr. Davis said the same thing at our interview. They have no control over the wait list, but most likely the high alternates would get in. Good luck! :luck:

Hey calisoca, I think you made a very good point about being evaluated the entire time that you're there at campus. I saw that some people relaxed just a little too much after the interview was over! Main point is to be polite!

Are you sure we were being interviewed the entire time? Though you should be polite and up to par the whole day, Mr. Davis he said we're only evaluated at the interview. Despite what others said on the interview feedback page, I enjoyed the interview. 🙂 Ask questions!

Yes I am sure. If somebody was in your presence the entire day, wouldn't you be watchin' them?

Bellashmella knows what's up--It's a marathon, not a sprint.

Grats fallingsky.

Nicky7, I know of several people in my class that came off the wait list, so don't give up hope.

I got the email from Davis about my acceptance as well. I'll be declining if I hear back from other schools though, so good news for the rest of you. :luck:
