Touro - Mare Island, Class of 2012!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
hey guys,
do you know if any DO students are going to be on campus next week? I called today and was told it would be fine if I came in for a self-guided tour.
I just want some students to talk to about their application process and what specifically made them choose Touro over any other options. Thanks!
matt

EDIT: in other news, do you guys know when their big-time cancer research center is set to open up?

Hey All-

I received an email from the administration about books and equipment. Can any upperclassmen (no gender implied!) opine about what books to buy or not to buy. Just about everything on the list is "required," but I'm wondering what I actually need to buy. The numbers are adding up to a mighty sum! What equipment, if any, should we buy. The email asked that we NOT buy any equipment until school starts. Rather, we are supposed to meet with equipment reps to buy stuff. I'm sure they have our best financial interests in mind. Seriously though, this list is pretty overwhelming. I'm wondering what I will really need versus what will sit on my shelf...

Equipment-
stethascope-
blood pressure cuff
otoscope
you'll need this stuff for all the physical exams that you'll be doing

books
Robbins Pathology
Roen's Anatomy-great bc has pictures of cadavers instead of drawings
I didn't use my books much, but some ppl do, depends on your learning style

don't they test stuffs in the books? If so, how did you manage to learn those without books? The library can't possibly has them all, and many people, not just you, will be checking those books out.

Oh and the school will buy the equipments, right?

You're kidding, right?

well no...because the school is buying our white coats (whether the money is already included in the tuition or not.), so I have to wonder if they will do this with our equipments.

If I'm remembering correctly, the email clearly stated that part of the reason they were having the company representatives come to the school was so that we could first, see/test the equipment that we're getting, and second, get a discount (yeah, right) when we buy it all at once. So no, they will not be paying for the equipment, that is included as part of the cost of books/supplies in the financial aid estimate of expenses.

The school does not pay for your equipment. They just pay for your lovely coat. I would also get your reflex hammer in addition to the equipment already suggested.

Happy 4th!

The profs test off their powerpoints and lectures. I never used the books unless to reference something and did quite well. So, it depends on your learning style. Oh yeah, as for the library, you can check any of the books out off reserve for a couple of hours, also, the library has all of the required books available for check out and there are multiple copies of them. As for equipment, the school doesn't buy them. I ordered mine online. Some of the equipment is super expensive, like the otoscope and opthalmoscope-so I bought them off ebay.

Hey I just sent an email out to the class of 2012 but I thought I'd post it on here too---does anyone know how big of a deal it would be to miss those 2 half days surrounding fall break in mid-october? There's one on friday and one on monday. I wanted to book a ticket back to Wisconsin for that time. Thanks!

Just to let you guys know, facebook has just opened the Touro University network so join up to see your fellow classmates from all the programs.

Thanks Alexis for the daily digest of medical school!

Just one question...why do we need scrubs? We got an email stating we need scrubs.

Hi 2012,

So a typical day for me:
Monday - lectures from 8-5pm- long day, usually hang out, go out to dinner w/friends, work out, etc, it's such a long day, maybe do some studying
Tuesdays-thursdays 8-10 mandatory labs 10-12 lectures
12-1 lunch
1-3 more mandatory lectures
Friday 8-12pm lectures
after class , we usually work out or chill out for a couple of hours, dinner and then study
if it's blocks, then study between classes and then study right after classes
on weekends, if it's not upcoming blocks, go out on Friday nite, maybe do some studying on Saturday, go out at nite, and then Sunday-study all day
NO dress code- except OMM labs- shorts and sports bra for women, and shorts for guys
lectures are not mandatory, but labs are
as for equipment, you'll definately need a stethoscope, we used our equipment a lot more this year w/ the new curriculum. I also have a otoscope and blood press cuff that I used a lot for our Doctoring labs. You'll need them b/c you'll be learning how to do physical exams on each other.
as for books, don't buy them now, Robbin's path is a good one to have
any other questions, PM me,

Alexis

It probably won't be a big deal but you may want to wait until your weekly schedule is posted so you can make sure no "mini- exams" or anything else mandatory are scheduled. For our Spring semester we had an exam on the last day before break. My guess is that your schedule will be posted within the next 2 weeks.

Thanks Alexis for the daily digest of medical school!

Just one question...why do we need scrubs? We got an email stating we need scrubs.

Scrubs are mandatory for your anatomy labs as well as closed toe shoes.

what color are our scrubs? and how much did you pay for it? I might know a place that sells cheap scrubs. Can I buy it independently? do the ones from school have any special features or logo that ones from outside store might be lacking?

  • It is recommended that students purchase an OMT table and stool. Students will have an opportunity to purchase a table through one of Touro’s student organizations in the fall.

  • Required Materials for Anatomy Laboratory
    • Scrubs - blue, any shade, two pairs.
    • Gloves. No powdered-latex gloves. All other gloves are OK. POWDER-FREE is essential if the gloves are latex. Instruments – not needed. We will supply.

The color of scrubs is not a big deal..... people from our class had all kinds of shades of blue and green.... (and as the year progressed, some other colors too) ..... Costco and wal-mart both sell a good pair of scrubs at a cheap price from my experience..... watch out for all-heart scrubs.... mine tore the second week I had them, and as I heard from others in the class, theirs too..... the important rule in the lab, and the one that they will militantly enforce is closed-toe-shoes ... they have a pair of rain boots by the door they threaten with for anyone who cones in with sandals and the like .... .. we also had to buy gloves, which the labs only condition is that they are powder-free .... I bought a box and still have about half ....

Most of the people in our class did not purchase a table ... People would usually congregate in the lab at school before an exam or gather at someone's house who had purchased one ..

one more suggestion - whatever stuff you purchase and don't want to lose put your name on .... doctoring lab turns into mass confusion by the time everyone rotates around the room, the end of class almost always resulted in coming back to my equipment that was under a lot of clothes and shoes .... my physical exam book got nabbed half-way through the year and I heard many times people were missing items like otoscopes, reflex hammers, and bp cuffs .... its not that people mean to, its just that everyone's stuff looks exactly alike .... I ended up writing my name on the front of my second book and planting my stuff in a pile before we broke off to do exams ...

oh, and i heard yesterday from someone in the office that a schedule should be up within the week ...

Very helpful. Thanks:clap:

What about clogs? Specifically plastic ones that have no holes in front but are heelless. Would these be ok?

man, why can't you just wear shoes like normal people do?

Hey everybody. Congratulations!
If anyone is moving into Broadstone Sterling, there is a "referral bonus" if you say that someone already living here told you about the place. I'll split this with you if you want some extra cash for all the sweet stuff you are going to be buying this year. I did this last year and paid for a few myself. Let me know!

Sincerely,
Ryan Hutchinson

Hey everyone!!!

Since they are forming lab groups and it is suggested to have anyone in your carpool in your lab group, I was wondering if anyone is traveling from Oakland area. I will be living off the Keller exit on 580. Let me know if anyone is interested and we can figure out the specifics. Let me know by Tuesday.

I am assuming you mean the crocs? ..... they definitely don't allow the ones with holes .... (last year they ripped into someone in front of a bunch of people) ... 😛 ....... however, I have seen people wear the ones without holes in the front .... but had holes down near the sole ..... whatev, all I am gonna say is that I would suggest that you wait to wear them ... they are particularly tough the first couple labs..... then they start to know your class and either ease up or don't pay as much attention .... either way, I would wait to wear them ... just my opinion...... take it with a grain of salt... 🙂

and if you want a big sib, but didn't respond yet, please do .... there are about 20 more big sibs than little sibs ..... and our class is an alright bunch of people ... I would take advantage ... 🙂

can you fill us in on this big sib little sib group? if people knew more about it i think more would join. thx bud

sure thing .... the big sib program is quite simply a way to let the first years have access to the vast amount of wisdom that a second year has gleaned... and although most of us don't even feel like second years, we have been here a year and have made it through ..... last year the big sibs were mainly around to answer or try to answer questions, given that we had the first year of the new curriculum... but this year, in my opinion, the first years can take full advantage of all the bumps that we endured ..... all that to say, its someone who you can ask random questions to, maybe get some notes or past tests from ... advice on Omm .... or just maybe meet up with to ease apprehensions ..... its a volunteer program, so almost all of the people, i am guessing, just want to help out and contribute to the next year's success.... anyway, theres my plug .... email Kris if you want to join in ... [email protected]

if you don't want to take your chances, there were "adoptions" (not formally, but first years that just jumped on board and found a big sib) that happened close to the first exam block last year.... I think one second year walked away with 5 lil sibs ..... 🙂 .......

I just got an email from the school saying that we have new health insurance. I got a look at the brochure and couldn't find dental coverage mentioned anywhere. Does that mean we don't have dental insurance? What are we, the British?

Does anyone have any insight as to how the early acceptace works for Touro-CA? Are higher stats the primary choice for the admissions committee? Just wondering what my chances might be. Thanks.

I have books for sale... all at $5-10 cheaper than amazon used prices ... Let me know if you are interested... I looked up the 1st year book list and I have many of your required text books.... You'll be saving a lot of money!!
Books in great condition... very useful to me but do not contain high-lighting or notes

Hi! I haven't gotten the email to put myself on the listserve. If anyone could copy and paste or pm the email to me, I would greatly appreciate it! I'm so nervous and excited to meet all of you! 😛 By the way, I think BruinBoy has plenty of useful books...such as Basic Path, Rapid Review and a few OMM books that would be helpful for the first month or so. There's nothing like a bargain 😉

Do you know where I can buy a reasonable mattress?

Before you guys go out and buy books, us 2nd years will be holding a book sale during either orientation or during the 1st few days of classes. we will be selling our books from last year to you guys. We will be holding it on campus. you won't need books during the 1st few days/week of class.

But you guys won't sell us the important ones, right? You'll be needing those books for reference and what not. If so, what are those books, so we can buy them ahead of time?

Here are a few that I know myself and more than a few others used more than other books:

Rohen's Anatomy - its just great, full color photographs of cadavers, I don't think I ever looked anything up in it and couldn't find it ..... the thieme atlases - they are pretty good and comprehensive, I know people that used them and just about an equal number of people who never picked them up, I like anatomy so I used them more than others ... the clinically oriented anatomy - the prof picks the clinical correlates out and tests on them, however, he does it a little too well seeing as I know a lot of people that read the boxes and still didn't know the answers to some of his clinical questions... his questions are more likely to be known if you just know the anatomy very well and perhaps a few key clinical pearls

Robbin's Path - there are basic and complete editions, I had the basic and loved it for its concise but thorough text, whereas I know a few people that really appreciated the more length and detail of the complete edition

Lipponcott's Biochemistry - Lipponcott's was stellar ..... MARK"S IS HORRIBLE ... its very scrambled information and there are errors throughout, also the book itself is crappy ... after just two weeks of use, all the pages fell out of mine .... I thought it was an alright text but started using Lipponcott's on recommendation from a few others in the class and saw just how bad Mark's really was in comparison

Harrison's Internal Medicine - This is the one text I actually didn't buy because our school has an online edition but many times I wish I would have, however they come out with a new edition every few years and I promise you, its a book that many of the professors still own and consult often, so now or later, I think its one of those "must buys"

A Dorland's or Stedman's dictionary - good to have, not totally necessary but its nice to get a full and legit write-up on a word rather than wikipedia

Some others:

medical physiology textbook - there is an online edition which I only used about three times

The atlas of histology - I used a ton, good to look through before the mini-quizzes in histo

the textbook of histo- didn't use at all, the professor actually gives you the information that she wants you to know

fundamental anatomy - written by the prof that teaches the section, supposedly its one of those that should be read cover to cover, I actually know people that spent their fall break reading the whole thing and did miserable on his questions on the exam, its very complete and full of info, but its probably better to just know the prof's powerpoints

Immune system- never used the book

Doctoring -
Mosby's physical examination - is pretty essential - although I know people that shared texts

foundations of osteopathic med - as bad as it sounds I never used it .. its huge ... only know a handful of people that appreciated it

study guide to epi and stats - never had it and didn't use it - borrowed a friend's a couple times, but more useful to just look over the powerpoints ..... however, at one point in the year, people were doing poorly and she instituted a mandatory read and questions but wasn't really mandatory, it didn't really make sense

The atlases of osteopathic techniques - there are a few, the campus organization for OMM sells one in the beginning of the year, my advice is to look a few over and decide which one you like since you won't even touch it until the second block .. I settled with the Kimberly guide that the campus org sels

All the rest of the doctoring books on there I didn't use, own, or know about

A warning - you may find out that you like some other book better on any given topic and thats cool .... lots of people use a lot of different texts ... some people did use some of the less-than-par ones listed above and did fine on the exam but if at any time a text doesn't work for you, find another one that will work for your learning style.... don't be afraid to look at opinion polls on amazon and use the highly rated ones instead of the recommended texts.. med school is about the information anyway, use whatever you have to

hope this information helps, peace out

ps ... Grant's atlas .. take it or leave it .... nice to have a preview and review at home but there is one for every table in lab so its totally not necessary

Congrats to the class of 2012! You're going to have a great time on the island.

I'm a current 3rd year who just finished up boards and lectures and am looking to sell all my textbooks, which includes books for both first and second year (including board review books). They are barely used and I only used them for reference. If you are in the market looking to buy books for cheap, PM me. My books are in Vallejo, so no shipping problems, and you can get them right away. 🙂

Good luck to all of you! If you also have any questions about 1st, 2nd, 3rd year, feel free to PM me as well. Have fun!

Does a certain person who is becoming a first year answer to the initials of MP and used to work in modesto? PM me.
