TouroCOM Master's Program

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi guys,
I tried asking about the progress of the application process, but unfortunately they couldn't tell me anything. I'm sorry. Just hang in there and keep calling until you speak to someone. Also don't be shy asking about the progress they've made in accepting students. You can also ask them how many students they've accepted so far. If you reach Lisette she is more likely to tell you how many students already got accepted.

The extent of Lissette's knowledge from my experience over the past few months is file completion and whether your file is currently under review. She does not know how far along in the review process your file is, but that's not really her fault since I'm assuming she's not on the review board.

How big is the class size? My file was under review as early as the 29th...

Also, I don't have high hopes about getting in:

3.2 cGPA, embarassingly low sGPA, and 24O MCAT (8P, 9B, 7V), if you're curious. 👎

EDIT: Just got my rejection letter. Best of luck to all of you.

Did they say why? Your MCAT is good honestly. I'm wondering what kind of applicants they are looking for...

I don't know how generic the rejection letters are, but it had to do with my science pre-reqs. Biology is the weeder course at Columbia, but a C+ in what is technically an introductory biology probably looked terrible to them. I have been taking upper level bio courses since then (that was sophomore year and I am a senior) and have been getting B's, so I thought that would help. Apparently not.

I applied to this masters complete in february, never heard back. I was just accepted directly into Touro-NV so I wont be needing this masters anyway.

Hey is there a FB group? Anyone else trying to do the summer program? Also anyone looking to get a place or need a roommate?

I know it's a pipeline to their Medical school.

What's wrong for being a pipeline? You mad?

I received an interview invite for the Masters Program today!!!!!!! 🙂 🙂 Application was submitted April 27th. Does anyone have any interview tips that has already been interviewed for the program? Mine will be May 22nd. I'd greatly appreciate it! 👍

Hey, I received a phone interview invite today. Is yours a phone or an in person interview? Thanks!

Hey, I also received an invite for a phone interview. Any helpful information would be greatly appreciated!

Hi all,

I am a current MS student at TouroCOM-NY. For those who have been accepted, please feel free to inbox me with any questions you might have about the program. I will also be part of the MS mentor program for the class of 2014. We will soon reach out to the accepted students, set up a facebook group as well as other activities that will benefit you all. If you are wondering about the summer anatomy class, I also took the class last year and I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone looking to do well in anatomy. Its a great oportunity to get used to studying at TouroCOM, and to know your future classmates and form study groups and lab partners as well. If you any questions about the summer class or anything else about the program, feel free to contact me.

For those who are still waiting to hear from Mrs. Mercado, keep your hopes up and try either calling her or coming to the school to talk to her or Dr. Prancan. But, try calling and setting up an appointment. I applied early May last year and got accepted around early June. Best of luck to those applying to the program!

I received an interview invite this past Friday! 🙂 Submitted my application around March 7th. Never heard a peep from them until this interview invite. I was starting to get worried I was not going to receive a call.

I'm in California, so will be doing a telephone interview. I spoke to my interviewer today, Dr. Maria Pino, and the interview will be next Wednesday, May 22nd. She said the interview will take approximately 15 minutes and she will be asking questions about my goals for the program and what I have done. Can't wait!

If you're curious, here's my background: have applied to med school 3x. I was put on the waitlist for a school my 2nd time I applied. I am on the waitlist for Tourocom DO program this year. MCAT scores are not too entirely great but decent enough. Did a post-bac program and did extremely well. Undergrad gpa is horrible but that was long ago (graduated in Fall 2006). Have been working full-time as a clinical research coordinator. Tons of volunteer experience. Shadowed one D.O. One of my lors is from a D.O. and the rest of my lors are really strong.

Everyone keep at it and don't lose hope. If you really want this badly, persevere and hopefully it'll pay off. My fiance works at Stanford Hospitals, and he passed on a message from a high ranking doctor at the hospital to me: "Tell her to not quit. I applied three times before I got into medical school and look at where I am now. She can do it."

Other physicians have shared their stories of trying and applying multiple times with me too. Keeps me motivated and hope it will keep you motivated too.

Keep your head up I got waitlisted at Touro-NV, They pulled me off wait list last week. Just keep calling and adding information to your file.

Do you guys thing it is a good idea to apply right now?

yea I think they accept applications until june after people don't get accepted to medical school this cycle.

Sorry, deadline this year was May 15.
Just checked and that is the correct date. I didn't realize they changed the deadline until the actual date. How poignant.

I applied to the masters back in March and was accepted early April. Anyone else who got accepted make or know of a Facebook group?

Hey all! I did a phone interview on the 13th and was accepted on the 17th!

Worldfmd: that would be really awesome and super appreciated! I've taken gross anatomy and neuroanatomy as an undergrad. I will be working this summer so I can't take that summer course =\ I feel ok about not getting to do it though!

I'm mostly worried about trying to find an apartment close by to the school. I wouldn't want to commute too far!

Congratulations!! I think you will be fine if you dont take the class, since you have taken that class in undergrad, but get ready to study hard when the semester begins! med school anatomy its different from undegrad anatomy, but having a background in it is a plus. Also, we have a great professor for this course!

About finding an apartment: we have a housing coordinator who will soon be contacting the accepted students about open houses and other useful information related to finding a place near the school.

Any one else having a hard time reaching Lisette this week?? I've been calling and emailing since Friday.. Is the school on some sort of a holiday?
I sent in my response letter and haven't heard anything back yet. Did those accepted receive any sort of documents ?

I will keep trying to contact her to confirm she got it. The first time I mailed my response letter but she said she never received it so she said to email her a copy instead. After that she sent me an e-mail with health documents that needed to be completed and other departments that I needed to contact (fin aid, registrar, etc).

My advice is keep calling her and be patient because it may take a couple of days.

I was accepted Friday, 05/17, for the master's program. I was also accepted to the post-bacc program at VCOM. I think the master's at touro is the best option...for me. I was very confused at first so I tried calling the number that was given to us. Additionally, I emailed the financial aid lady and told her about my acceptance and she sent me a check list of what i needed to finish prior to July 1st. I talked to Mrs. Mercado today and she informed me about housing information, summer anatomry course ..ect. For anyone still trying to contact her, I guess you have to keep trying. She is very nice but this is thier busiest time of the year, so it will be hard to get in touch with anyone.

What I really want to know is the statistics for the masters program. i.e. how many students actually earn a 3.5 GPA and pass the comprehensive final. And if you are very close can you apply to the DO cycle.

Hey cool people, how long after the interview did you hear back?

And also, is interview basically guaranteeing admission (assuming you didn't screw up interview?)

Best of luck!

From what I was told, about 35 out of 70 earn the 3.5 and pass the comprehensive final. You can apply to the DO cycle since they are two separate programs.

what happens if there are more people who get the requirements like say 45 or 50? are all accepted then? or just the top 35

Whaaaaat??? Only half the people get accepted into their DO class? Hmmmm 50% successful meeting of the requirements...yikes

If more meet the requirements than they can all get in. Nonetheless, your grade is determined based on how well you do against your classmates so there MUST be people that underperform, so that top performers can be differentiated.

If the average in an exam is a 70, the 70 = B+ (3.3). Therefore to establish a B+ or higher, you must score at the class average or higher, so you depend on your classmates to do worse than you.
When I interviewed for the DO program, I learned that the grades were curved based on previous years' data. With this model, isn't competition between students eliminated for the A grade?

Why wouldn't the grading scheme for the masters be the same?

Interviewed on Wed 5/22, accepted today 5/24!

I am soOOoOOooo happpyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😍 😍 😍

I'm from the west coast so I need some housing advice! Would a ~20 min commute (apartment in the upper west side, around 70's) be too far of a commute from school? Should I just stick to the morning side heights area so i can be in walking distance,?

That's plenty of time. Just take the 2/3 from 72nd st to 125th st.

I lived in Morningside Heights all four years of college. I now live near Lincoln Center and prefer it much more. Being situated btwn Sheep Meadow in Central Park and Lincoln Center is just plain awesome, especially in the summer months.

But there won't be any time for that, since you'll just hitting them books. Go with the cheaper option 😀

I also interviewed on the 22nd but got nothing. Did you hear back via mail or email?

Anyone else in the same boat?

Hey Everyone!
I was just wondering if anyone has applied for TouroCOM's masters of science in interdisciplinary studies program? I've just sent in my application, and was wondering if anyone else had any information about it. I believe this is the first year they are starting this, but you can correct me if I'm wrong.
Thanks!
🙂

Why on earth would you ever give money to Touro for one of their stupid master's degrees. Find a reputable and *real* school, like Georgetown. Forget Touro.

And uh ahem....jusy where are you in life right now...silent cool

I'm originally from the south so I was actually wondering the same thing. Thanks for the advice.

What kind of questions did they ask during the interview?

Any one nervous about housing? I have no idea where to look. Any accepted students progress in that area yet? Also , any one doing the summer anatomy course?

Based in my interview (I was accepted a day after my interview) they are interested in knowing why you want to be an osteopathic doctor, your experiences in healthcare--extracurricular activities and research, motivation for pursing medicine, and if you are dedicated enough to succeed in their rigorous curriculum. Just make sure you think of answers to those questions and jot them down just in case you get the same ones.

* In response to Vinny's Question

Thank you for the housing advice! If any current students have anything else they would like to add, us non New Yorkers would greatly appreciate it 🙂

Like does anyone have a preference over walking vs subway?

If you have a subway ride of greater than 20minutes, I suggest you buy noise cancellation headphones.

That person apparently goes to a DO school but has been trying to encourage people to pick MD over DO unless it's TCOM (because its dirt cheap). 😱

Thank you PS4 for the update

I'm really nervous too!!! I have apartment hunt before but not in NYC. It's completely different. I'm not planning to take the anatomy course because I want to focus on the housing hunt.
