TouroCOM Master's Program

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
just wanted to comment on the post about how many people get in...I see people talking about 30 only get in, or 45, or 55, or X numbers, or 1.. ...unless u see it in an official touro document or the directors/administrators told you this, then its all rumors. Also, whatever numbers the previous class had, doesnt mean that it will be the same for every class...for those incoming MS students, you are going to hear lots of rumors around only to scare you out...dont let these intimidate you, and make sure to know that there are 2 things that school ask for you to be a DO the following year: 1. 3.5 GPA and 2. a P in the COMP. If all the students fulfill these requirements, then all of them get accepted into the school. now, are these requirements difficult to get? sure, like if you go to the gym and lift a 50 pound dumbbell...but you have lots of time to train your mind and spirit to make this happen!! and you will have the support and all the tools to make it happen, professors and current students!!

I'm really nervous too!!! I have apartment hunt before but not in NYC. It's completely different. I'm not planning to take the anatomy course because I want to focus on the housing hunt.

I felt the same way last year around this time too. You guys should be getting a housing orientation and more info soon. You could call touro and ask for Mrs. Hunter, who is in charge of housing, she might have the dates for housing orientation, or she should have more info about it. there is time, but yes, do start looking for option to live in the city!

I got my acceptance letter via email. From Lissette Mercado

Hi All, 🙂

I'm currently in the Master's program. I live VERY close to school and will have a free bedroom available July 1st in my 2 bedroom 1 bathroom apartment. I'm looking for a female roommate . If anyone is interested PM me without any hesitations! 🙂

Could anyone currently in the Touro NY Masters program tell me a little bit about their experiences this past year? Student life, class schedules, course work. etc.

I am starting to look this weekend. I plan on getting a studio and am super nervous about housing. I hear it's grueling out there (I'm from Cali). They sent me an email with some housing leads. Haven't looked at it much though.

I'm also going to do the summer anatomy course. Never took it, so I definitely benefit from this course.

Any one nervous about housing? I have no idea where to look. Any accepted students progress in that area yet? Also , any one doing the summer anatomy course?

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Seems like they've really picked up on the interviewing and application review right now. 😀

Interviewed may 28th and accepted today!!!🙂🙂🙂🙂
Remember DO NOT GIVE UP if this is truly your dream!!!
Pm me if you need anything

I was accepted to programs in CA and NY. I need a new perspective since I might be missing some points. Please respond if you have any words of encouragement.

I'm sorry that I'm bombarding you with these questions, but I think I could use a different perspective since everyone who lives near me is obviously saying to go with New York. I was accepted to programs in both NY and CA. The major pros to New York are that they guarantee your admission if you have a 3.5GPA and pass the comprehensive exam. I'd like to compare that to the Cali program.

Someone posted in the Cali forum, "100% of the masters students were accepted to the medical school." That is a really strong statement. This is one the biggest factors for me going to New York -- they guarantee admission if I have a 3.5 and I pass the comp exam. Is it "worth the risk" to go to California? Technically it is still a risk in New York because I'm not guaranteed a 3.5GPA. Still, doesn't it seem like New York guarantees it more?

How easy/hard will it be for someone who lives on the East Coast, Massachusetts, to move to California? I'd have to find roommates and an apartment without looking at the place or meeting the people. I currently live in Boston, which makes moving to NY seem so much easier than moving to CA. Does anyone have experience moving coast to coast?

The biggest reason why I have doubts about NY is because I think it would be such a great learning experience to live in California. I feel like I would be able to grow so much as a person there. Is that a strong enough reason?

ACCEPTED! Words can't describe my excitement! 😍

Looking for a female roommate! Anyone????

Hey Everyone!

I will try this again! I was in the Master's Program and will be a first year in the fall! I am currently looking for the female roommate. I would need someone by July 1st, this would be perfect for someone who is taking the summer anatomy or histology course( WHICH I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!). My apartment is a 5 minute walk from school! Rent is 1100 per month for your share message me for more info! Thanks!! 🙂

Could former Masters students tell me about their general feeling for the comprehensive? Is it doable? how long did you study?

Thanks in advance

🙂

Depending on your MCAT...I think you should apply to MD school, not to a DO post bacc. If you are interested in osteopathic medicine then apply to a DO school

Hi!

I was complete Jan 14 ( confirmed by Lisette through email) . It said in 2-3 weeks I should be updated on my status.. almost 4 weeks passed and i was growing impatient so I gave Lisette a call couple of days ago and she said I'm definitely being interviewed, there was a delay because I had not been assigned a faculty member yet. I should be hearing from them "soon." I'm hoping early March. the interview will be either over skype or in-person (I live in NJ) 🙂

hi Chris, there aren't any recent stats for this program online --the earliest stats that I saw on their website are from 2009. I think if you call Lisette she could give you a general idea of what the incoming class averages have been--she's very friendly and helpful. As for me, if anyone wants specifics of my stats just PM me. Basically i have 3.7 CGPA and 3.8 SGPA and mcat in low twenties. best of luck!

Yeah I submitted my material 2 weeks ago and they said they have received everything. Now we just have to wait.

Glad to see recent posts for class entering Fall 2014. I submitted my materials since middle of January and was complete about 2 weeks ago. Lissette informed me that I am signed up for an interview and will be given a time to schedule in the next 1 week.

Does any know how the interview is?

ooo good luck! keep us posted on how it goes!

Finished a few retakes to bump my sGPA up and sent my app in this week! Really hopeful about this one. Lisette is uber helpful so don't hesitate to reach out to her. Their app cycle opened up in November so I was nervous that my app would be crazy late.. but I'm glad to hear they haven't even started interviewing yet. I know that as long as your MCAT is in the twenties and sGPA/GPA are over 3.0 you should be golden but the requirements are getting tougher. Lots of luck to everyone.

Just got the call-finally!!! At first it was just going to be a phone interview on Monday then he offered me to just come so I can see the school, sit in for a few lectures/labs, and meet faculty/current master students ! So I'll be there Tuesday morning. Anyone else get a call? Pretty sure they'll be calling today or definitely next week! I'm so EXCITED, the interviewer already sounds very laidback--looked him up and found out he's one of the professors who teaches Anatomy! eeek

Congrats! I received a phone call today as well. My interview is on Monday. Wish you the best!

I was granted a phone interview for touros masters program. Does anyone have any advice or would care to share their experience. I'm expecting the questions why DO? What are your interests outside of medicine? biggest concerns facing medicine? How do you handle stress? attributes of a doctor etc. thank you for your help.

Congrats guys. I'm still waiting for my LOR to arrive and then hopefully I will get an invite for an interview. Ugh the wait is brutal 🙁

Hi guys, I just found out about this program a couple days ago. I plan on applying even though it's quite late.. Could any of you that have had the interview give me some tips on what kind of candidates they're looking for? My stats are low but I have shown general improvement. I really need to write a good ps so that they can at least consider my application. Not sure where to start, though. Help please!!

You aren't late. They JUST started reviewing applications and sending out interviews, though they've been accepting apps since November. MCAT has to be in the 20s and both sGPA and cGPA need to be as close to 3.0 as humanly possible.. if your cGPA is a little less than 3, they seem to be more forgiving as long as your sGPA is at 3.0. It used to be a lot easier to get into this program, but from what I gather both the DO side and the Masters side are becoming more and more competitive. I've toured the school and gathered that they're looking for a wide range of candidates. Obviously people that want to be DOs, but also people who are comfortable in urban environments (they're in Harlem and do a lot of community stuff). The student population is also really diverse. They have open house dates where you go on a tour with Emil (one of the admissions directors) every month. They let you talk to students, check out all the classrooms/labs.. If you live near-by I highly suggest you check it out. The area isn't for everyone, but its a fantastic school. This will tell you everything: http://legacy.touro.edu/med/docs/MastersProgram.pdf

Thanks for the response! I will probably go to their next open house.. I really wanna go there!! I think it would be a great opportunity for me to strengthen my application & to solidify the basics. Have you applied to the program too, or?

Absolutely, go! I would also suggest reaching out to Lissette Mercado the program director. She is beyond helpful and will make sure you know exactly what you need to do, if there's confusion. Also, I want to second what the above poster said. Definitely get your materials in as soon as possible. The deadline is fast approaching, but from what I've seen in this thread from previous cycles, they accept/interview well into May and probably June.

I'm applying to Touro and a few other schools!

I would apply as soon as possible. The application deadline is April 15. Spring break at TouroCOM starts on Monday April 14, which means you need to have your application, transcripts etc. at Touro by Friday April 11 (because of the weekend). This gives you less than a month to write your ps, gather your transcripts/LOR and mail it to Touro. Its do-able but you gotta start right away. Good luck
Oh, good to know! I'm trying to get my app together now. Thanks!

I've spoken to Lissette a couple times now. My only worry is that I wasn't planning to take the MCAT until May and scores are required for the program. I asked Lissette if I could still apply and send scores when they come in. She said yes, but I still worry that they won't look at my app until then which by then they'd be accepting people. Good luck with your apps!

You definitely don't want to rush the MCAT, but not having scores until June would make me hesitant about applying this cycle. But since she's giving you the go ahead, maybe you should just send all your stuff in, confirm with her that they will interview/accept people up until the very last second, and then keep checking with her as the weeks progress to see how many spots are left. At least it will help ease your mind some to know that there are a good number of seats left by May

Hello everyone I finished my two phone interviews for Touro....Im in Florida 🙂 The interviewer asked about my MCAT score and I asked if there was a cutoff for their MS students to matriculate into their medical school. He said they were looking for at least a 28 31-33 range. I have a 24 as far as I know as long as the MS students achieve a 3.5 GPA and a grade of pass of the comp exam they matriculate as long as they are in good standing etc. I was wondering if any former MS students who are now in their DO program were accepted with MCAT scores below the range I was told like 24 and up. thanks for your help.

thank you for sharing your experience with us. i am a little confused....TouroCOM wants a MCAT score of at least 28 to get into their master's program?

Wow at least a 28 with a preferred 31-33 range?? That's interesting. They've really cranked it up this cycle. Before it was at least a 20, then it went to in the 20s, now you need at least a 28?? Why in the world would you apply for a DO masters program if you have a 30+ MCAT? You need at least a 3.0 to get in, but I would think an MCAT between those ranges might be enough for direct matriculation in DO school.

I think we are thinking a little bit too hard into this whole MCAT issue. If there was an MCAT cutoff, it would have been clearly stated in fine print on the official website. The requirements on the manual are clearly stated. I spoke with Ms. Mercado months ago and she said the minimum MCAT accepted is a 19.
The fact that we received an interview invite speaks volumes; obviously they looked pass the MCAT score and saw other strengths that they considered were worth seeking to know more about you.
Remember that we applied to a Touro Masters program, not the College of Osteopathic Medicine.
3.5 GPA + professionalism + Pass on Comp final = Acceptance into their Medical School

I hope your logical line of reasoning is correct.. I honestly can't think of any other DO post-bacc with such high MCAT requirements, but if OP is correct.. I need to add a few more schools to my list because there's no way I'm getting into Touro lol.

The preferred 31-33 range with at least a 28 is the standard for direct entry into the DO program NOT the masters program. So, don't worry...if you get the 3.5 GPA and pass the comprehensive exam, you won't have to retake the MCAT to matriculate with a less than 28. Most of the master students will not have an MCAT score of 28 upon entering the program.
