TouroCOM Master's Program

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
meh.
By what time last year were notifications sent out? And what is the first day of classes for the A&P summer course, and the Fall Semester?

Last year people were getting accepted up to the week before class started :/ Summer courses start 30 June end 24 July.. Fall semester begins the 26th or 27th of July.. whatever the following Monday is.

He's right. You don't apply via AACOMAS. You basically have a seat in the next DO class, it's reserved for you. However, it's yours to LOSE by not making the 3.5 cutoff or passing the comprehensive exam.

There's a wealth of information in the 20 pages of this thread. If you read that you'll honestly know everything.. it's pretty much how I learned a ton. You can also join the FB groups if you've been accepted. Upperclassmen are actively answering questions on them.
Cool thanks. I'll check out the FB pages too.

I just called Lissette and she said to don't expect any news from them this week. The "committee" won't have a meeting this week. I had the interview 2 weeks ago.

Does anyone know what percentage of the masters students in the program matriculate into the college of medicine including students who get moved into the med school in the spring semester?

What?! I called yesterday and she told me that I'd hear back this coming Friday!
...But then she tells me that every week, so I guess what she told me was meaningless yet again.

I was told by a current masters student and now first year that 3 students are usually bumped up mid-year (# that usually dropout from 1st year class).

Hi,
Just to inform all of you, I talked to Lissette 10 minutes ago. She said they are still working on the folders of accepted students and that they will be sent out next week with all of the information we need (financial aid, books, classes, schedule, etc.). We will also get an ID number so we can start using the portal and what not. Just an FYI if you've been accepted and haven't sent you final official transcript with the degree conferral stated on it make sure you do that cause that's why she called me. Finally, I just requested to join the Facebook group for the masters students, so accept me into the group if you are in it please! I'm looking for roommates.

My interviewer explained that 80 usually start the program, only about 65 complete it (dropping out for various reasons, family/personal issues), and a little less than half get offered a seat in there medical school. So try and be top 30 of 80 and you'll be fine.

Out of couriosity. I hear that a few Master Students a year get bumped up into the Medical Student class because of drop outs and available seats. Not that I think I could be one of those 3 people out of 80, but what criteria do they use to decide who they bump up?

I think it's just based on GPA/class rank. The top most performers get offered the option to move up if students drop out, BUT if said students get it together and are able to retain their seat, you have to move back to your original place. Which kind of sucks, and it was explained to me that as Masters students there are 2 classes we're not taking an OMM class and another one. Those have to be made up at some point, which kind of puts a strain on your courseload, but it's still a great option.

thank you for your response
I really appreciate it. as long as we work hard we should be fine

did anyone accepted get their registration info, financial aid info or health/immunization forms?? I sent in my final transcripts last week and haven't heard back from the office yet. heck, i don't even know when classes start lol

I was accepted to programs in CA and NY. I need a new perspective since I might be missing some points. Please respond if you have any words of encouragement.

I'm sorry that I'm bombarding you with these questions, but I think I could use a different perspective since everyone who lives near me is obviously saying to go with New York. I was accepted to programs in both NY and CA. The major pros to New York are that they guarantee your admission if you have a 3.5GPA and pass the comprehensive exam. I'd like to compare that to the Cali program.

Someone posted in the Cali forum, "100% of the masters students were accepted to the medical school." That is a really strong statement. This is one the biggest factors for me going to New York -- they guarantee admission if I have a 3.5 and I pass the comp exam. Is it "worth the risk" to go to California? Technically it is still a risk in New York because I'm not guaranteed a 3.5GPA. Still, doesn't it seem like New York guarantees it more?

How easy/hard will it be for someone who lives on the East Coast, Massachusetts, to move to California? I'd have to find roommates and an apartment without looking at the place or meeting the people. I currently live in Boston, which makes moving to NY seem so much easier than moving to CA. Does anyone have experience moving coast to coast?

The biggest reason why I have doubts about NY is because I think it would be such a great learning experience to live in California. I feel like I would be able to grow so much as a person there. Is that a strong enough reason?

Do you mind sharing the link to the CA forum? I am trying to determine the difference between the 2 also. Have you learned anything else that you can share?

I just an email about the summer classes. It says to bring in a photo id, scrubs, sneakers, and a laptop. Does anyone know if the scrubs are needed on the first day?

I emailed Ali Khan this morning and he said no lab on the first day but that doesn't answer the scrubs question. So I would say bring the scrubs just in case. Did anyone get their registration stuff yet? I'm taking the summer class and I'm just wondering if this packet will come before the class starts.

I will be joining the Master class! Moving from CA, so any info on housing/roommates would be extremely helpful!

Hello🙂 Does anyone know whether we will have classes monday through friday, morning till evening or not? How's the schedule like for Fall? Thank you in advance🙂

Go to the CA school!!! If its 100% acceptance then go with it!!!

Hi guys. I just got my MCAT back. 31 (12/6/13). I have applied to TouroNY for DO school, but I want to have a backup plan. My uGPA is 3.52 with a science Gpa of 3.52 as well. Do you guys think I can be considered a Good candidate for the SMP, just in case I don't get into the DO program? I also have 200+ hours of clinical exposure (i.e. volunteering and shadowing). I have also done minor research and many other EC's. Let me know what you all think 🙂 thank you very much for any responses.

I'm really interested in this program, so can anyone who took part in this program tell me more about your experiences? Was it worth putting down the $20k + living expenses in order to have a shot at the medical school? Speaking of which, how many in your class was able to obtain the required 3.5 GPA and passing cumulative exam and how many did not? What did you like best about it? The worst? How was faculty and the students in the masters class? Are you able to have live classes with the OS1, or were you in a room watching it via live streaming?

Would you do this again?

If you meet their criteria do you get into Touro's medical program the same year you finish the masters program or do you have to go in the following year?

Can members who were accepted into the program possibly post their stats if they don't mind.

Thanks!

Would love to hear the thoughts of current/past people!

doesn't the program apps for fall 2015 open in a couple month's? also... what are the percentage's on matriculating to the DO right after, once program complete.. is it like a its you spot to lose type thing?
thanks!

Was accepted as well!..feel free to ask questions

To those that were accepted, CONGRATS! I was wondering what your stats were if you don't mind sharing them.

Do you all know anything about pre-reqs? The documents says 2 english composition classes. Do any English classes count or does it have to be one that specifically intended to improve writing skills?

Could those of you who were accepted please give your stats? I'm really interested but afraid my GPA would hinder me. Thanks in advance 🙂

Did they change the interviewing? I thought last year they didn't do anything til later in the cycle.

Hi Everyone!

I'll be applying to this program in a couple of weeks. Would any current / former students be willing to give some insight into their experiences with the program? I'm most interested in hearing your thoughts on how hard it is to actually obtain a 3.5? I.E. I really don't want to spend $20,000 if getting a 3.5 is pretty much a long shot. I thought the program was pretty much a guarantee as long as you get as least a 3.5 and pass the exam. However, past posts have made it seem like only ~30 students actually make it in.. seems a little low to me considering there are 70-80 people enrolled.

Are there chances for you too re-take a class or raise your grade at all?

Congrats to those who have already been accepted and happy holidays to all!

Hi everyone!I had my interview a few weeks ago and was accepted into the program.
Undergraduate GPA: 3.7 B.S Biology / Graduate GPA 4.0 M.S. Biotechnology / MCAT 19.
I will be moving into the city and I am looking for a roommate. I plan to take the pre-anatomy course starting July 8th. Let me know if you have any further questions. 🙂

We have the similar stats, man! (except for the master's degree). I just had the interview last week, and I hope to hear back from them soon. Can you tell me how long did it take to get a response from them after your interview? Thanks.

You guys know about the English Composition requirement? Must it be 2 3-credit writing classes or does an upper level English class count?

Has anyone applied or considered applying while they have a pending application to the DO program? Has anyone talked to admissions about that? I'm worried that I haven't heard back on my DO app and don't want to miss out on this program if I don't get in. Really want to go to Touro Harlem.

I'm currently applying to DO school and have an application at Touro. I recently spoke with the admissions coordinator for the masters program to discuss the requirements and expectations. Anyway, I mentioned in my initial email that I was currently applying to the DO program and she was fine with it. She answered all of my questions and encouraged me to apply so I don't think they have any problems with applying to both. Good luck!

Is it too late to apply? Does anyone know if class is almost full? I have an acceptance to the Henderson campus' MHS program, which also grants guaranteed admission as long as we score in the higher 50th percentile and at least a 25 on the MCAT, but they don't give out a contract. But I heard that for this school, they actually give you a contract for the guaranteed admission? I'm also applying to DO but want to apply just in case. Should I apply here? If it helps, my sgpa is 3.61, cgpa is 3.67.

Not too late. The application literally just opened last month. They usually interview and accept majority of their class in spring so you're early.

Thanks much! Did she give you firm numbers on how many start and how many enter DO program the next year?

No problem. Yes, she told me that the class is usually about 70 students each year and that around 60% enter the DO program the following year. Last year, there were ~65 students in the masters program and ~45 went on to enter the DO program.

P.S. She also told me that your overall GPA during the masters program needs to be at least a 3.5 in order to guarantee admission into the DO program. I don't know if it was just me but I thought you needed a 3.5 in every single class in order to guarantee admission or at least that's how it seemed to be worded on the website. Anyway, I was happy to hear that its just your overall GPA. Happy New Year!

Does anyone know if you have a lower mcat (i.e. lower than that of what they accept for their DO program), but are accepted into their M.S. program, will you have to retake the mcat to be granted admissions to the DO.

No, you will not need to retake it.

Edit: There are two only requirements needed for admission into the D.O. program, a 3.5 cumulative GPA within the program and a passing score on the comprehensive exam at the end of the year. As long as you get both of those you are in.

Thank you! Pre-req question. The DO requires 6 English credits but the MS requires 6 English Comp credits. Are they considered the same? Do I need two intro writing classes or is one upper level English class ok? If no, I'm going to register ASAP for a winter session course. Ugh.

Not positive about this one but I would assume it's the same. Definitely consider emailing the director before registering for a class. She's really nice and quick with emails.
