what is the pressure exerted on a dam by the water at a point 5meters below the surface.
given P=pgy (p=1000 kg/m^2). passage also says total pressure takes into account the Patm .which is 10^5 N/m^2)

the answer just uses straight plug n chug with P=pgy but it doesn't add the Patm to pgy to get total pressure. Anyone know why?

ohhh so you would only need Patm to calculate total pressure of water at some lower level of water?

Look at your questions carefully. It is not asking for total pressure, it is asking the pressure exerted by water. Patm at the surface is exerted by air above the surface, so not considered "BY THE WATER." Here is your original question: what is the pressure exerted on a dam by the water at a point 5meters below the surface?
