I just had a question about transcript processing that I couldn't really find on AMCAS. When you send out your transcripts, I imagine the post office takes a few days to get it into their mailbox. Once it's physically there, what needs to actually be done in order for your primary to be submitted for review? Is it just processed and noted as received on your online account? Or is there an extra step? Can I afford to wait to submit until I actually see my transcript status change to "received" or will I benefit from submitted before then? Thanks!

If your primary is ready, submit it. It wont help to wait for your transcript to be processed. The reason it takes so long is that AMCAS is sorting through a couple thousand transcripts so it takes awhile for someone to put it with your file. Submitting your primary now will put it in it's own pile waiting to be processed, so you mine as well get yours in early.

Once you submit, there's no going back though, make sure you're ready! Good luck.

You wont be added to the queue for verification until all your transcripts have been received. there is no advantage to submitting before your transcripts are received.

False. There is a huge advantage.

If you submit ASAP without your transcripts received, once the transcripts are received your application will be at the top of the pile. If you wait until your transcripts are received and then submit, your application will be reviewed much later.

With a smartphone you can know within 5 minutes when your transcripts are received. If you always leave your application ready to submit but continue to fix it up whenever you have time, there is no advantage since you can just login to a nearby computer and hit submit.

I understand your point but I dont see that as a huge advantage.

Can you explain yourself a little further... are you saying that the benefit to submitting before your transcripts have been received goes beyond having your application enter the review queue immediately upon your transcript being received vs. the slight lag of receiving notification that they've received your transcripts and then hitting submit?

Noooooo, that's not what I mean. Let me try to explain further.

Lets say that applications are processed in order of when they were submitted. Let's say I do not have my transcripts received and I am the 5th person to submit on the very first day.

1. random guy
2. random guy
3. random guy
4. random guy
5. ME with no transcripts received
6. random guy

If the first four people to submit before me all have their transcripts in and get processed, I will then be at the top of the list. Because I don't have my transcripts in, they will go to the next person BUT I REMAIN AT THE TOP OF THE LIST UNTIL MY TRANSCRIPTS ARE RECEIVED AT WHICH TIME I WILL THEN BE THE NEXT PERSON TO BE PROCESSED.

Now if I wait until after my transcripts are received to submit, I could be very far down on the list. As time goes on, the number of people who have submitted increases and that list gets longer.

Instead of being at the top of the list, I could be down to say number 899 because I waited a week until my transcripts were received before I submitted.

This is wrong. https://www.aamc.org/students/download/182162/data/amcas_instruction_manual.pdf

Look at page 90, when you submit without your transcripts, you are under the "waiting for transcripts" queue, there is no line there. Not until you receive your transcripts does your status change into where there is actually a line for verification

Are you sure about this? I'm pretty sure you don't join the line just because you submitted you join the line when you submit and the transcript is received.

Source?

I am in the same position (waiting on one more transcript). I called AMCAS yesterday and was told by one of the representatives to submit my primary as soon as possible to join the queue. He basically explained that once they get to your application they will keep skipping over you until your transcript is received at which point they will begin processing your application.

This does not match up with what is in the official AMCAS 2014 Instructions.

Yeah, I took a look at the manual and see what you mean. I don't have an explanation for the discrepancy between what's in the manual and what AMCAS told me over the phone. OP, I certainly wouldn't rush your primary to get it in. I was done with mine, multiple revisions and all, so regardless I assume it didn't hurt for me to go ahead and submit.

Yeah I mean we can be more sure that the manual is right and that one person is wrong, I mean im sure not everyone at AMCAS knows everything about the application. Plus if we look back at the years of verification threads on SDN we can be sure that you dont get in line until your transcripts are received. 🙂

Too lazy to find the actual thread where I saw that at, but a simple view of the submission dates and transcript received dates will show this:

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=920463&page=18

For instance:

BigBear123 Submitted: 6/7, Transcripts Received: 6/8, Verified 6/20

Submitted on the 7th, transcripts received on the 8th, verified on the 20th. Now compare that to everyone else who submitted on the 8th and already had transcripts received.

Only 2 out of 8 were verified on the 20th along with Mr. Big Bear.

more examples? because AAMC states otherwise. Mr. Big Bear could have been doing ED, which has a separate queue and is the source for most discrepancies in those lists.

Check 'GooseWing'

Just look at the first few days and pick out anybody who's transcripts were received after the 5th and compare the day theirs were received with the people who submitted on the same day. I just randomly picked out Bear & Goose.

edit: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/search.php?searchid=23093344 Not ED.

Right, but how do you know if they submitted ED or not? Why would AAMC publish one thing and do the other?

Check my edit.

AAMC doesn't have anything saying that those who submit and then have transcripts received will or will not be at the top of the pile. Instruction manual only says that once transcripts are received, you'll be put on verification list. Doesn't say where on the list.

AAMC cannot be trusted. I had my entire application ready to submit on the 4th and we see how that turned out.

Your edit brings me to nothing..

Well if you have fingers you could scroll down and see that the guy applied to a s***load of schools.... Not ED.

Maybe you could try with your own fingers?

because I get to a page that says "Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms."

oh lol

just search for 'BigBear123'. His posts from several different school specific threads show up. Guy got accepted to multiple schools including Cornell & NYU (i think), very impressive.

I'm still gonna go ahead with the AAMC official manual rather than a few cases you can find on the verification threads that matter by a day or so. This could be because of the system in which AAMC has people under review, meaning they could have all been under review but Mr. Bear's app was chosen by someone earlier to verify. We don't know how the under review process works, so I would call it on that.

also pulled this one out

nickmx50: Submitted: 6/21 (11:00AM PST), Transcripts Received: 6/27 Verified 7/28 (6:03AM PST)

compared to those who submitted on the 27th.
NecessAndSuff Submitted 6/27, Last Transcripts Received: 5/5, Verified: 7/30
dsoz Submitted 6/27 Last transcripts Recieved: 6/26, Verified: 7/30
rachelkj Submitted 6/27, Last Transcript Received 6/27, Verified: 7/28 (6:17 PST)
(my point being a difference of 0-2 days isnt enough to prove your point)
one who submitted on the 21st with his transcripts in
ChuckDiesel: Submitted 6/21, Transcripts Received: 5/24, Verified 7/19 (7:44 PM EST)

one who submitted a few days later, no transcripts in
mtremblay Submitted 6/23; Transcripts Received: 7/2 Verified 8/6

And lets not forget that about 90% of the threads youll find on this topic say that the submission date doesnt matter until your transcripts are received.

You do realize all of those submissions you posted support my assertion right?

😕 what is the question here? If your application is ready, submit it.👍
You don't need to wait for anything.

AMCAS ‏@amcasinfo 14 Jun
REMEMBER: You can submit your #2014AMCAS application before #AMCAS gets your letters, transcripts, or #MCAT scores.

Some people like to continue editing since you can ALWAYS find some way to make things better

Ummm I was showing how the person who submitted on the 21st was verified at the same time (within 1-2 days in the middle of the application cycle) as those who submitted on the 27th since the transcripts didnt get in till then, so the submission date (21st) didn't give that guy an advantage, he was near the same spot in line as those who submitted on the 27th since they already had his transcripts in.

Sorry to bump an old thread but...

I called AMCAS again today (still having trouble with said transcript) and asked for clarification on this particular issue. As stated in the AMCAS manual, you will not enter the verification queue until all transcripts are received, however, once those transcripts are received you will enter the verification queue in the order that your application was originally submitted (as indicated next to the 'submit application' button).

I think the main source of confusion in this thread was in regards to your placement in the verification queue so I hope this helps!
