I am a PGY-1 who wants to change programs in internal medicine - could anyone who has done this or knows more about this know how to switch programs? where do I even find a vacancy for PGY-2 spots? do i have to go through the match again? thanks!!

Depends a bit on your circumstances. If you are transferring from one IM program to another, you can do so at the PGY-2 level. If you are transferring from any other program you can get usually a maximum of 3-6 months of credit, all depending on the details of your program.

There is no one place that all open PGY-2 positions are advertised. You should definitely look at http://jobbank.im.org This is AAIM's (The alliance of academic internal medicine) website and job bank, of which APDIM (the Assoc of Prog Directors in IM) is a sub group, and several PGY-2/3 openings are usually listed there.

If you have your PD's support, they can sometimes help you find a new position. Or, you can simply contact programs via email to see if spots are open.

Good luck!

Thank you so much for your help!!! I just wanted to ask - would you recommend contacting other programs to find out if they have any open PGY-2 spots? Would I have a better chance of finding an open spot later on in the spring?
Thank you!!!
