i'm starting my first year....but i really wanted to go to columbia...(as you can guess, i didn't get in there)

but does any of you know the history of people transferring to columbia??

i bet it is crazy difficult....but stilll any chance???

Well, the first question I would ask is "Have you addressed the reasons you didn't get in there in the first place?" Also, unless someone drops it's pretty unlikely that schools will increase the size of their class. They have a class size that fits their faculty and facilities. If you hear of a drop then maybe it might be worth poking around.

Most of the transfers I know of are having to move because of a spouse in a residency required the move. Other legit reasons are going to be fewer and further between.

From my understanding of the schools I've briefly asked about this, they really don't like doing it, and it's only for really extreme circumstances, or as Beestie said, being required to move around, and even then, it's still hard to do.

And are you sure you want to go to Columbia after having already finished your first year? They've got a very heavy Science class load, more so than most dental schools, and if your dental school didn't match it somewhat closely, they'd probably just tell you that you wouldn't be able to take the classes you needed to get a degree from them. Don't get me wrong, it's an awesome school though.

Why don't you worry about doing well at your dental school and making friends instead of transferring? Also, chances are you will get a better clinical education at (insert your school name here) than at Columbia.

Well, I don't know which dental school you're starting at this year. But first of all, I do NOT recommend that you transfer school. Each dental school has their own curriculum. Some dental schools have heavy biological science emphasis, while other dental schools let their students start clinical courses during their first year. There are also dental schools with PBL curriculum as well.

If you have connections to people at Columbia, then you may start as a 2nd year student at their dental school.

Otherwise, you will have to start back as a first year student if you do decide on transferring to Columbia or any other dental school.

That's just what I've heard from a friend of mine who tried transferring dental school couple of years ago.

Or, you can take a year off and reapply for your dream school if you want it that bad. Then you can give your seat to someone who really want it.
