I am starting MS1 in a few days as an MD student. I was curious as to whether it was possible for me to transfer from my school (where i am in just the MD program) to another school (into an MD/PhD program). I realize that i would have to rock years 1 and 2 and do exceptional on step1, but do schools actually take transfer applicants? i looked around on a few school websites but didn't see anything, and it wouldn't be very tactful for me to ask my school if i can transfer to a different school in 2 years if i do well.

If your school has an MD/PhD program, your best luck might be to stay where you are and switch programs. I have met people who started out without funding and got it, but never a transfer, sorry.

The only time we've had transfers here is when a new faculty member brought 2 MD/PhD students with him from his former university. These students had started their MD and PhD at the other place, but their final years (and degrees) were with us.

Every year we also get 1-2 internal applicants from our own 1st or 2nd year MD classes, and they generally have good chances. I agree w/above--try applying to your own school's MD/PhD program as an internal applicant. I've never heard of a straight MD transferring to MD/PhD at ANOTHER school.

I agree with this one. I would try to switch in your own school first, and I think this will be alot easier.

Randomly, I just met someone at my school that transferred here from another nearby MD program. I think this person was either in M1 or had just finished, but was able to transfer to our MD/PhD program. Call the directors of the schools you are interested in and see if they are open to this idea. Be ready with a good explanation as to why you are switching because they are not going to want someone that they think might leave their program too. First though, do what the other people said above and look into your own school's MD/PhD program.
